Multi-Craft Maintenance Technician (A/B/C)

About the Role

• Title: Multi-Craft Maintenance Technician (positions open on all shifts in plant 1)
• Type: Permanent, full-time
• Location: Spartanburg, South Carolina
• Multiple roles open: facility is expanding to reach 5 technicians per crew in Building 1
• Pay Range: $26.47 - $42.35 DOE.
• Technicians support maintenance operations across two buildings on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule
• Weld tech positions are being consolidated into the multi-craft structure; assembly duties will expand to include glue and rivet applications, spot welding, and resistance welding (no laser welding)

Ideal Candidate / Role Requirements

Must have:

• One or all of these 3 are required:
• Electrical skills
• Hydraulics experience: highest priority; hardest skill to source locally
• Mechanical skills: required
• Must be willing to work rotating 12-hour shifts (days and nights) and accept potential shift reassignment based on union seniority
• Must demonstrate hands-on engagement and curiosity during the facility tour portion of the interview

Nice to have:

• Welding and hand fabrication: strong asset; a current gap on the team
• PLC and controls knowledge: nice to have
• Automotive industry background not required; fast learners from other industries are welcome
• Recent technical school graduates are encouraged to apply

About the Organization / Team Dynamics / Culture

• Charlie Allen (Technical Director) oversees the maintenance department
• Harley Thompson (Maintenance Supervisor) is the primary interviewer and day-to-day team lead
• Building 1: on the press side currently 7 Technicians (4 of them are leads) and assembly side 3 technicians (1 of them lead); goal to reach 10 on either shift
• Building 2: 4 technicians on an 8-hour schedule; fully staffed, no openings
• Current team strengths: PLC/controls, electrical, some mechanical
• Current team gaps: hydraulics, fabrication, hands-on and hand welding
• Unionized environment; shift assignments are not guaranteed and may change based on seniority bumping
• Continental schedule: 2-2-3 rotation, 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM–7:00 PM); day and night assignments do not rotate between individuals
• Some weeks are 52 hours (guaranteed overtime), some are 30 hours.

Sizzle About the Role

• On-site certifications provided within days of hire: forklift, aerial platform lift, and crane operation
• Clear advancement pathways: Multi-Craft B and A levels, controls technician, project engineering, and line engineer roles
• Exposure to emerging diagnostic technologies: infrared scanning, thermography, and ultrasound air leak detection (phased rollout over 3–9 months)
• Stable, tenured team with a collaborative culture
• Immediate Certifications available: forklift, aerial platform lift, (please provide a list of options for our marketing outreach) provided on-site within a couple of days of hire
• Multi-craft technicians have moved into:
• Project engineering roles
• Controls tech roles
• Line engineer roles
• New technology coming into the building (3–6–9 month onboarding goal):
• Infrared scanning, thermography, ultrasound for air leak detection

A/B/C level explained: (from prior notes – please confirm)

• Multi-Craft C
• Basic proficiency in Maintenance Technician C, B & A levels. Successful score on the Multi-Craft Test that falls in the Multi-Craft C range. Experience using PLC software. Ability to modify software and perform minor program adjustments; write simple programs; program drives; program robots.
• Multi-Craft B
• Perform all aspects of Multi-Craft C with increasing PLC programming responsibility. Successful score on the Multi-Craft Test that falls in the Multi-Craft B range. Successful score on the Multi-Craft Test that falls in the Multi-Craft B range.
• Multi-Craft A
• Perform all aspects of Multi-Craft B. Project management, complex PLC programming. Experience working with and maintaining servo motors; able to work with and on communication protocols such as switches and ethernet. Successful score on the Multi-Craft Test that falls in the Multi-Craft A range.

• Assessment: Ramsey test (currently being revamped to a proprietary assessment; trial run this Wednesday; score aligns to skill level A/B/C and corresponding pay)
• Plant tour is a key evaluation component - candidates naturally reveal hands-on experience and technical curiosity during the walkthrough
• Full interview + tour + test: approximately 2 hours; (1 hour for the test)
• Submit resumes and candidate summaries to Charlie Allen, Harley Thompson, and Malia Meredith
• Cadence: candidate pipeline update to client every Thursday; candidate follow-up every Friday

Role Summary

We are looking for a skilled Multi-Craft Maintenance Technician to support production operations across stamping, welding, and assembly processes. Candidates are evaluated and placed at the A, B, or C skill level based on demonstrated experience and performance on a standardized assessment. Key Responsibilities

• Adhere to all safety rules, regulations, and standards at all times on the production floor.
• Ensure all products are maintained and repaired to the highest standards of quality.
• Collaborate with team members to maximize operational productivity and efficiency.
• Support achievement of daily and weekly production goals through proactive maintenance.
• Utilize PLC software to modify programs, perform adjustments, program drives, and program robots (level-dependent).
• Manage complex PLC programming and project-based maintenance tasks.
• Work with servo motors and communication protocols (switches, Ethernet) as required..
• Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area upon completing all assigned tasks.

   

  Qualifications & Requirements

• Demonstrated proficiency in maintenance technician functions at various levels, verified by a standardized Multi-Craft assessment.
• Experience with PLC software and the ability to write, modify, and troubleshoot programs.
• Proficiency in reading, writing, and comprehending instructions and directions in English.
• Willingness to consistently wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on the production floor.
• Flexibility to perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of the role.
