Lead School Bus Mechanic & Shop Supervisor

The Lead School Bus Mechanic & Shop Supervisor is responsible for leading daily maintenance operations within the fleet shop. This role oversees school bus mechanics, assigns work, ensures quality repairs, and helps keep vehicles safe, compliant, and on the road. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong mechanical expertise and the ability to guide a team in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Supervise and support a team of school bus mechanics
• Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with OSHA Standards, and perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
• Assign daily work orders and prioritize repairs based on operational needs
• Perform diagnostics and assist with complex mechanical issues
• Ensure all maintenance and repairs meet safety and regulatory standards
• Conduct quality checks on completed work
• Coordinate preventative maintenance schedules to minimize downtime
• Maintain accurate service and repair records
• Monitor shop productivity and workflow efficiency
• Mentor technicians
• Enforce safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized shop
• Communicate with operations/transportation team regarding vehicle status

Required Qualifications:

• Degree from an approved two-year program in truck repair / mechanics from an accredited technical school
• Minimum 3 years of reliable truck repair work experience
• Minimum of 3 or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s)
• Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with school bus & passenger endorsement or the ability to obtain and maintain licensure within the first 3 months of employment
• The ability to obtain and maintain the Underground Storage Tank Training with certificate within 6 months of employment

Preferred Qualifications:

• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification as a School Bus Mechanic or Master School Bus Technician certification
• 3 years of reliable work experience with school buses
• 1 year of leadership and/ or supervisory experience

Working Conditions:

• Required to exert physical effort that will include but is not limited to frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, crouching, and climbing; Constantly standing, walking, and grasping; Occasionally: sitting and balancing
• Required to be exposed to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc.)
• Required to be exposed to a physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements. This job operates in both inside the garage, as well as in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity.
