Agriculture Inspector 1 - Plant Protection Field

Job Summary: Under Direct Supervision Learn Plant Protection Programs Inspect live plant growers and dealers (sod farms, nurseries, tree farms, etc.) to ensure compliance with state regulations and proper maintenance of plants. Verify compliance with Department-issued agreements and certifications for interstate and international export of plants, fruits, vegetables, etc. Perform state and federal phytosanitary certification inspections as requested. Perform apiary (bee) inspections as requested. Monitor crops and/or environs for specific agricultural pests. Participate in invasive species detection and eradication activities. Other Duties As Assigned Additional duties as assigned by the supervisor. Residency Requirement Applicant must reside in this county or the surrounding area, or be willing to relocate. Location Requirement Banks Barrow Dawson Elbert Forsyth Franklin Gwinnett Habersham Hart Jackson Lumpkin Madison Rabun Stephens Towns Union White Minimum Qualifications High School diploma / GED and one (1) year of experience in the area of assignment; or two (2) years in college, which included 12 semester hours or 20 quarter hours in chemistry or life sciences. Preferred Qualifications and Skills Completion of a bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, biological sciences, or a directly related field OR ownership or management experience in an agricultural or horticultural business. Working knowledge of Windows computer operating systems and applications. Physical Demands Work outdoors in varied terrain, including plant nurseries, greenhouses, agricultural production areas, and apiaries for extended periods of time. Intermittent periods of walking, squatting, kneeling, and driving. Must be able to lift 50 lb boxes. Travel is required. May be responsible for providing transportation to work sites. Background Check The Georgia Department of Agriculture conducts background checks on all final candidates.
