Overview

The Outpatient Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) plays a critical role in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in an outpatient setting. This position works collaboratively with neurosurgeons and the multidisciplinary team to manage pre-operative and post-operative care, perform clinical assessments, and coordinate treatment plans. The APP ensures continuity of care, patient education, and adherence to clinical protocols while supporting quality improvement initiatives and compliance standards.

 

Key responsibilities include:

· Conducting outpatient clinic visits, including new patient evaluations, follow-up appointments, and post-operative checks.

· Performing detailed neurological assessments, reviewing imaging studies (CT, MRI, X-rays), and documenting findings in the electronic medical record.

· Managing common neurosurgical conditions such as spine disorders, brain tumors, hydrocephalus, and peripheral nerve issues in the outpatient setting.

· Coordinating pre-operative workups, patient education, and informed consent discussions.

· Providing post-operative care in the clinic, including wound checks, suture/staple removal, pain management, and rehabilitation referrals.

· Collaborating with neurosurgeons, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and primary care providers to ensure continuity of care.

· Triaging patient phone calls and portal messages, addressing urgent concerns, and coordinating timely follow-up.

· Supporting quality improvement initiatives, compliance programs, and patient satisfaction goals within the outpatient neurosurgery practice.

Qualifications

Purpose & Scope:

A Physician Assistant (PA) employed by VHC Health Physicians (“Physician Group”) is required to complete a PA Agreement with their Collaborating Physician(s). This PA Agreement will describe the PA’s role and function of the PA, including but not limited to, number of patients, types of illnesses, nature of treatments, special procedures, the nature of physician’s involvement, and the evaluation process. In addition, it will indicate the prescriptive authority of the PA and approval of invasive procedures authorized by the executed PA Agreement.

Overall, the PA will support objectives, budget, performance metrics and medical activities at an Individual level including implementation of quality control standards, risk management and compliance programs.

Education:

Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program required.

Experience:

One year of experience as a Physician Assistant preferred.

Certification/Licensure:

Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the Virginia Department of Health Professions required.
