This position is exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules and the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime requirements. Position Purpose The Resident Director (RD) is a live-in professional who facilitates, creates, maintains, and promotes a safe and secure residential community supporting the learning mission of The Evergreen State College (Evergreen) and enhancing residents’ academic, personal, and social development. RDs supervise Resident Assistants (RAs), coordinate their job responsibilities with other Residential Life staff, and facilitate community development, care case management, and student conduct intervention. This position responds to emergency/urgent situations, serves in the on-call rotation for the residential community, and works collaboratively with other department (Residential and Dining Services – RAD ) and division staff (Student Engagement, Equity, and Support – SEES ). Nature and Scope Resident Directors are responsible for a core set of essential functions for their assigned areas of responsibility in Residential Life, including supervision of specific RAs. In addition, each RD will assist with and learn about specialty areas and take the lead on coordinating projects for the department. Duties and assignments may change depending on staffing level, resident needs, new college initiatives, etc. Examples of specialty areas and projects include: Conference Management : work with staff in Conference Services, RAD facilities, and the RAD front office to develop, facilitate, promote, and maintain a Housing conference program. Assume leadership of student staff that assist to check guests in/out, field questions, maintain keys, and lead on-call efforts associated with conferences. Programming : create, facilitate, and promote programming efforts in RAD that enhance community development, safety, and sustainability. Assume leadership for large-scale residential programming efforts and serve as the primary contact for student groups interested in programming in the residential community. Coordinate with campus resources, including Student Activities, Academic and Career Advising, Dining, and Student Wellness, Recreation, Athletics ( SWRA ), etc., to encourage residential student awareness and attendance at campus-wide programs/events. Project Coordination : which may include coordinating orientation for new residents; leading the RA hiring process; developing and coordinating RA in-services and ongoing training; assisting in the planning of opening/closing the residence halls; and/or leading new college initiatives. Student Conduct Case Management : administer the Student Conduct Code ( WAC 174-123) for specific cases assigned by the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities or designee. Provide coordination and monitoring of student conduct cases involving residential students. The Student Conduct Code provides guidance regarding students’ rights and responsibilities, due process for addressing allegations of misconduct, and an educational opportunity for involved students. Develop conduct meeting and determination letters, and complete procedures for assigned conduct cases. Help coordinate training for RAs and RDs on conduct processes, and develop and/or facilitate creative, educational sanctions. Student Care Case Management : coordinate care case assignments for students who are referred for Residential Care Team intervention. Identify and provide support and resource referral for residents experiencing transition, developmental, academic, financial, and wellness-based issues. Plan and facilitate residential programming to address common needs. Establish and maintain on-going working partnerships with SWRA (Health and Counseling), Access Services, Financial Aid, TRiO, and Academic and Career Advising. Student Organization Advising : provide leadership, training, advising, and support and serve as the Advisor for the Evergreen Residence Hall Association ( ERHA ), a national student organization focused on residential advocacy, leadership development, and programming. Teaching : co-teach in the First-Year Experience Curriculum (Greener Foundations), a for-credit course taught in partnership with faculty and other staff instructors. Essential Functions All RDs perform the following core responsibilities: Crisis Management Provide individual advising to residents and staff as needed (within the scope of skills and training) and make referrals to appropriate campus and community resources when needed. Provide crisis management and conflict management assistance for residents. Support and refer residents with medical/metal health concerns to the appropriate Evergreen or public services. Work collaboratively with personnel in law enforcement, fire safety, emergency medical, emergency response, Student Wellness Services, and Thurston County mental health services to provide a supportive environment for residents in need of services. When crisis situations occur within the residential communities, provide and maintain ongoing communication with RAD management, affected student staff, individual students, and appropriate authorities. Provide appropriate documentation of crisis events and incidents. Emergency/Urgent Response Serve as a member of the RD on-call rotation, triaging student concerns and providing backup and emergency support for the RAs and residential community members on nights and weekends throughout the year. Serves as departmental representative when on duty and exercises independent judgment with response and communication to supervisor or designee and others. Work in collaboration with Police Services to manage student concerns. Respond to questions and concerns raised by residents’ parents/family members/emergency contacts as allowable by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act ( FERPA ). Engage in timely communication with RAD leadership regarding situations arising with residents, student staff, and facilities. During major emergencies (disasters), the on-call RD may serve as the Residential and Dining Services operations representative to provide leadership for the residential community. RA Staff Management and Community Development Provide support, supervision and leadership for RA staff through weekly individual meetings, on‑going evaluations, regularly scheduled staff meetings, and in‑service training to ensure area staff meet job expectations. Promote and facilitate the establishment of a purposeful, just, sustainable, and secure living environment for residents. Ensure the RA staff actively participate in developing lines of communication with each resident and support the development of a positive community with the residents in their area of responsibility. Supervise RA staff to communicate and interact with each resident living in their area of responsibility using an intentional conversation model. Supervise RA staff using the engagement model in the promotion of educational, recreational, and social opportunities that complement Evergreen’s academic mission. Support RA staff in having conversations and discussions with residents about race, religion, culture, nationality, gender, gender identities, class, and other areas where marginalization can occur. Supervise the RA staff to encourage residents’ self‑responsibility, while honoring the philosophy of the Evergreen Social Contract and RAD Policies. Manage discretionary budget ensuring appropriate use and record keeping. Maintain on‑going written individual performance assessments for assigned RA staff, ensure appropriate accountability as needed and in collaboration with supervisor. Student Care and Conduct Case Management Proactively educate students regarding available on and off campus resources and relevant RAD , college, state, and federal policies and procedures; ensure that assigned care and conduct cases are addressed appropriately and in a timely manner. Review care and conduct reports and duty logs daily, provide appropriate updates to senior staff, follow‑up with on‑call staff, ensure documentation, and follow through with appropriate case completion if applicable. Address student conduct matters as they arise and/or make referrals to RAD /Student Rights and Responsibilities leadership when applicable. Ensure that RA staff document student care reports and follow‑through with assigned care case check‑ins. Manage the implementation of conduct sanctions, up to and including probation (as per training and the housing contract) accurately and expediently. Ensure students’ privacy is maintained for all care and conduct cases/reports in your area of responsibility Ensure due process is followed in conduct meetings, sanctions, and processing of administrative paperwork. Training/Teaching Participate in the selection, training, and development of RA staff. Provide ongoing RA staff development and take an active role in planning and facilitating training; evaluate RA training needs and maintain a list of training goals and objectives to enrich RA skills and abilities. Residential and Dining Services Management Team Attend and participate in weekly meetings, including Residence Life Staff meeting, residential care/conduct meeting, RA In‑services/Staff Meetings, Res Life/Facilities team meeting, as well as monthly departmental and quarterly divisional meetings and retreats, and other meetings as deemed appropriate. Provide written quarterly evaluations of assigned RAs. Maintain regular office hours and be readily available for residents, staff, and other members of the Evergreen community. Assist in implementing conduct‑related and unregistered student intervention, follow‑up, and evictions/lock‑outs if necessary. Contribute to RAD communications and publications, as needed. May serve on committees, as assigned. Operate college vehicle to pick up programing materials/supplies and transport equipment and/or materials from off campus for on‑campus programing. Perform other duties as assigned. Ability and desire to train and develop quality programming and leadership skills in a group living situation. Ability to maintain appropriate privacy and confidentiality of student related records and information. Ability to understand and comply with established college policies and procedures, local ordinances, and Federal and State laws. Ability to ensure controls and accountabilities of programming funds and to manage resources. Ability to develop and maintain a working knowledge of computer programs and systems used for student housing and conduct (StarRez, RoomPact, Advocate). Ability to create, organize, and maintain records, files, and notes. Ability to move between work locations and respond to emergencies, at times during inclement weather, and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree (completed by the first day of employment). One academic year of experience working with college students. Desired Qualifications Master’s degree in student development or related field. Two years of experience working with college students in Residential Life or Housing. One year of experience supervising Resident Assistants. Experience with case management. Experience using developmental, educational, or restorative approaches to student conduct management. Conditions of Employment Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work. This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination. Must meet the eligible driver requirements: 1) Valid U.S. driver’s license, 2) 18 years old or older, 3) Two or more years of fully licensed driving experience, and 4) Clean driving record with none of the following within the past 2 years: Any suspension/revocation of license for reckless driving, hit and run, leaving an accident scene, failure to appear, DUI or other vehicle‑related felony; or for multiple traffic offenses (2 moving violations/infractions in 12 months/3 moving violations/infractions in 24 months) resulting in a Conditional Status driving record or subsequent suspension/revocation of license. Must live in assigned on‑campus one‑bedroom apartment (approximately 400 sq ft). Must have successfully obtained a Bachelor’s degree as of the first day of employment. Must attend staff development, training, and meetings necessary for adequate performance of assigned tasks. Must uphold and follow established policies of Evergreen and Residential and Dining Services and the laws of Thurston County, Washington State, and the Federal government. Must not advance personal, political, commercial, or religious enterprises through the position. Must maintain appropriate confidentiality and privacy in compliance with FERPA .
