Energy Marshal

This role will provide leadership and oversight of the project’s quality program, ensuring work is planned, executed, inspected, and documented in accordance with project requirements, industry standards, and established quality procedures.
The CX/EM Manager serves as a key liaison between project leadership, commissioning agents, contractors, operations teams, vendors, client representatives, and safety personnel. The successful candidate will possess strong technical knowledge of mission-critical systems, energized work practices, commissioning processes, and risk management, with the ability to drive accountability, coordination, and safe execution in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
Commissioning Planning & Readiness
- Lead commissioning readiness planning and coordinate commissioning milestones throughout project execution.
- Verify system completion status and alignment with startup, functional testing, integrated systems testing (IST), and turnover requirements.
- Coordinate readiness reviews and confirm construction, quality, safety, documentation, vendor, and operational prerequisites are complete prior to testing activities.
- Develop and maintain commissioning readiness plans, milestone trackers, readiness matrices, and startup schedules.
Energy Isolation & LOTO Governance
- Manage energy control expectations and ensure compliance with project lockout/tagout (LOTO) requirements.
- Coordinate isolation planning, switching activities, and boundary verification for energized and potentially energized systems.
- Review Methods of Procedure (MOPs), energized work plans, and risk assessments to support safe execution.
- Verify required approvals, permits, and authorizations are obtained before energization, testing, or maintenance activities occur.
- Support Energy Marshal programs and ensure energy-related work is executed under controlled conditions that protect personnel, equipment, and facility operations.
Energization & Startup Coordination
- Coordinate energization readiness activities and support startup sequencing across electrical and mechanical systems.
- Validate turnover prerequisites, commissioning requirements, vendor readiness, and operational support plans.
- Facilitate energization reviews with project stakeholders and verify all required safety controls and approvals are in place.
- Track startup progress, risk mitigation actions, and critical path commissioning activities.
- Ensure energization activities are executed in accordance with approved procedures, project requirements, and operational expectations.
Safety, Risk Management & Field Oversight
- Promote safe execution of commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, switching, and energization activities.
- Identify commissioning and energization risks early and develop mitigation strategies with project stakeholders.
- Support pre-task planning, field readiness reviews, hazard assessments, and work authorization processes.
- Escalate safety concerns and coordinate corrective actions as required.
- Ensure commissioning activities comply with project-specific safety requirements, client standards, and industry best practices
Documentation, Turnover & Operational Readiness
- Verify commissioning documentation, test records, energization logs, LOTO records, training documentation, and turnover packages are complete and accurate.
- Coordinate operational readiness reviews and support owner acceptance processes.
- Ensure deficiencies are resolved, training requirements are satisfied, and warranty support documentation is properly transferred.
- Collaborate with operations teams to facilitate a seamless transition from construction to facility operations.
- Support final acceptance and project closeout activities through completion of commissioning and energization deliverables.
Stakeholder Coordination & Communication
- Serve as the primary point of contact for commissioning and energization-related matters.
- Coordinate activities among commissioning agents, Energy Marshals, MEP Construction Managers, QA/QC Managers, OFCI Managers, contractors, vendors, operations teams, and clients.
- Participate in project meetings and communicate commissioning progress, readiness status, risks, deficiencies, and startup milestones.
- Provide regular reporting to project leadership regarding commissioning readiness, energization planning, testing performance, and turnover status.
- Promote collaboration and alignment among all stakeholders involved in commissioning and operational readiness activities.
Quality Planning & Documentation
- Develop and maintain quality plans, inspection and testing procedures, audit protocols, checklists, documentation requirements, and other quality-control processes.
- Verify that project documentation, inspection and testing records, turnover packages, and quality records are complete, accurate, and properly maintained.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, contractual requirements, industry standards, client requirements, and company quality procedures.
Team Leadership & Continuous Improvement
- Lead and mentor commissioning and energy management personnel while promoting accountability and operational excellence.
- Support development and implementation of commissioning best practices, procedures, and lessons learned.
- Foster a culture of safety, preparation, risk awareness, and proactive issue resolution.
- Drive continuous improvement across commissioning, startup, energization, and turnover processes.
- Support organizational initiatives focused on mission-critical project delivery and operational reliability.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Systems, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in commissioning, construction management, operations, engineering, mission-critical facilities, or related disciplines.
- Experience supporting large-scale data center, mission-critical, advanced technology, healthcare, industrial, or similar complex projects preferred.
Commissioning & Operational Readiness Experience
- Demonstrated experience leading commissioning planning, system startup, testing, energization, and turnover activities.
- Experience coordinating commissioning agents, vendors, contractors, operations personnel, and project stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of facility operational readiness, system acceptance, and owner turnover processes.
- Experience supporting Integrated Systems Testing (IST) and mission-critical commissioning programs strongly preferred.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong understanding of mission-critical electrical and mechanical systems, including power distribution, switchgear, generators, UPS systems, cooling systems, controls, and supporting infrastructure.
- Knowledge of commissioning processes, testing protocols, LOTO procedures, MOPs, energization practices, and risk management principles.
- Familiarity with applicable industry standards, safety requirements, regulatory codes, and best operational practices.
- Ability to interpret construction documents, commissioning plans, technical procedures, and operational requirements
Risk & Problem Solving
- Proven ability to identify quality risks, perform root-cause analysis, develop corrective actions, and drive issues to resolution.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Leadership & Communication
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing multidisciplinary teams and coordinating complex commissioning activities.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to engage field personnel, technical specialists, contractors, client representatives, and executive stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced project environment.
Certifications (Preferred)
- Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), or equivalent commissioning credential.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification.
- Certified Energy Marshal, Electrical Safety, NFPA 70E, or other mission-critical safety certifications preferred.
- PMP, PE, or other industry-recognized project or technical certifications are a plus.
Compensation Range:
