Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist

Duties include but are not limited to:

Performs computerized tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest and body with and without the use of contrast materials.

Participates with scheduling exams in a manner so as to optimize scanner times and reduce wait times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases.

Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of nonstandard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of CT scanning. Advises and notifies radiologists or referring physicians of examination results requiring their immediate attention.

Works closely with Radiology Nursing staff to achieve common objectives during special procedures.

May perform exams, such as biopsies, and drainage placements utilizing surgical sterile techniques.

May assist and anticipate the needs of the radiologists in the performance of the exam. Must be continuously on the alert for the patient's condition, sterile field, catheter and guide wire sizes and configurations, etc. The alertness of the individual is essential to prevent contamination, recognize patient reactions, anticipate technique factor difficulties, etc.

Prepares contrast materials.

Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self.

Performs image reconstructions on advanced workstations as directed by the radiologist or as part of a given study.

Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients.

Properly identifies patient images.

Responsible for the intravenous injection of contrast media.

Responsible for explaining exams to competent patients so that patients understand what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible.

Responsible for maintaining regulatory compliance as stipulated by agencies such as JCAHO, IG, VHA, and local VA facility, as well as department policies.

Continually reviews new developments in the field of computerized tomography.

Responsible for the accurate capturing and maximization of "CPT" codes per procedure.

Participates in mentoring or trains new technicians in digital computed tomography and other special procedures.

Participates in "on-call" for CT Scan and Special Procedures as assigned.

Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday - 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; Scheduled On Call, Rotating Holidays and Weekends

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.
