Probation Program Assistant

Job Title Probation Program Assistant Location Billings, MT Salary $20.36 per hour Responsibilities Perform initial assessments of youth offenders, determine seriousness of situations, and contact appropriate individuals. Develop and schedule community service work sites, explain requirements, and monitor compliance. Supervise youth completing community service commitments and maintain records of hours worked. Provide onsite supervision for youth during working hours. Facilitate or present programs such as alcohol awareness, and maintain related records. Recruit, screen, train, and coordinate community task force members. Initiate contact with victims, set up payment schedules, track restitution owed and paid, and handle related paperwork. Transport probationers to and from work sites or facilities. Monitor and record dispositions, contact youths to encourage compliance, and prepare compliance reports. Provide instruction to youths in classroom settings, evaluate progress, and prepare educational records. Assist probation officers in developing case plans and provide after‑school tutoring. Maintain databases related to program and financial aspects. Provide courtroom testimony when requested and prepare legal documents such as petitions, orders, and summons. Qualifications High school diploma or vocational school graduation. Approved college‑level coursework in behavioral sciences and experience working with youth preferred. Knowledge of youth probation principles, court procedures, and the Montana Youth Court Act. Ability to read, understand, and apply department policies and procedures. Proficiency with a personal computer and word‑processing applications. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, establish relationships with youth, families, school personnel, and the public. Ability to remain calm when dealing with upset or emotionally charged individuals. Capability to prepare legal documents if required. Benefits Work/life balance and family‑friendly policies. Work may involve varied weather conditions. Requires sitting, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing stairs, lifting, and operating office equipment. Field work may involve operating gas or electric powered equipment. Licensure & Certification Valid Montana driver’s license and proof of insurability if using a personal vehicle for State business.
