About Black Men Teach (BMT)
Black Men Teach is a movement and a mission — building a future where every child has the opportunity to learn from, be led by, and be inspired by a Black male educator. We recruit, prepare, and support Black men to enter and thrive in the classroom, strengthening schools and transforming communities in the process. At BMT, we’re reimagining what it means to teach, lead, and belong. Our team is bold, innovative, and deeply rooted in purpose. We don’t just talk about change — we design it, build it, and live it every day. Our work is rooted in the belief that representation matters—and that our children’s schooling experience will never be complete without Black male teachers in the classroom.
Position Overview:
The Development Director is a strategic leader who drives the revenue that powers Black Men Teach's mission. Reporting to the Chief Advancement & Marketing Officer, the Development Director designs and executes a comprehensive, data-informed development plan that diversifies and grows support from foundations, corporations, civic organizations, government sources, and individual donors. This role turns revenue goals into a clear, measurable roadmap, using CRM data and financial modeling to forecast, track, and communicate progress. The Development Director supervises the Marketing and Communications Manager and the Program and Events Coordinator, aligning storytelling, events, and donor engagement into one fundraising strategy. This position is ideal for a strategic thinker, skilled relationship-builder, and people leader who is passionate about educational equity and representation.
Core Responsibilities
Development Strategy & Revenue Planning (30%)
- Lead the development and execution of an annual and multi-year development plan with clear revenue targets, strategies, timelines, and metrics across all funding streams.
- Build and maintain revenue forecasts, gift pipelines, and scenario models in the CRM and Excel/Google Sheets to guide decision-making and resource allocation.
- Analyze giving trends, donor retention, and campaign performance, and recommend adjustments to keep the organization on track to meet its goals.
- Present regular revenue updates, dashboards, and strategic recommendations to the CAMO, CEO, and Board of Directors.
- Partner with finance to align fundraising projections with the organizational budget and ensure accurate gift reconciliation and restricted-fund tracking.
Institutional Giving: Foundations, Corporations, Civic Organizations & Government (30%)
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a growing portfolio of foundation, corporate, civic organization, and government funders.
- Oversee the grant calendar, including prospecting, writing, and submitting proposals and reports, and ensure strong compliance with funder requirements.
- Pursue and manage public funding opportunities at the local, state, and federal levels, including applications, budgets, and reporting requirements.
- Develop corporate partnership and sponsorship strategies, including employee giving, matching gifts, volunteer engagement, and cause-marketing opportunities.
- Build relationships with civic, faith, fraternal, and community organizations to expand BMT's base of support.
Individual Giving & Donor Cultivation (20%)
- Design and lead a comprehensive individual giving program, including major gifts, mid-level and recurring donors, annual appeals, and peer-to-peer campaigns.
- Manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects, and prepare BMT leaders and board members for cultivation and solicitation meetings.
- Equip and support board members in their fundraising roles with tools, training, and strategic guidance.
- Develop donor stewardship and recognition strategies that deepen engagement and increase retention and lifetime giving.
Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration (20%)
- Supervise, coach, and support the Marketing and Communications Manager and the Program and Events Coordinator, setting clear goals and fostering professional growth.
- Align marketing, communications, and events with development priorities so campaigns, stories, and gatherings consistently drive donor engagement and revenue.
- Oversee fundraising events and campaigns from strategy through post-event follow-up and return-on-investment analysis.
- Establish development policies, processes, and CRM standards that keep data accurate, gift processing efficient, and reporting reliable.
- Collaborate with program staff to gather impact data and stories that strengthen proposals, reports, and donor communications.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree or CFRE certification preferred.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive nonprofit fundraising experience.
- At least 2 years experience in a leadership, supervisory role.
- Proven track record of creating and executing development plans that meet or exceed revenue goals.
- Demonstrated success securing five- and six-figure gifts and grants from foundations, corporations, and individual donors.
- Experience managing government grants and their compliance and reporting requirements (required).
Skills & Attributes
- Forward-thinking strategic planner skilled at converting fundraising targets into structured, measurable operational roadmaps.
- Expert-level mastery of donor database administration, custom analytics dashboards, and prospective gift pipeline management (required).
- High proficiency utilizing Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel for financial modeling, budget alignment, and revenue forecasting.
- Demonstrated adeptness with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office platforms.
- Superb written and oral communication capabilities, with emphasis on inspiring grant proposals and executive-level presentations.
- Refined interpersonal and solicitation aptitude, successfully engaging partners ranging from grassroots leaders to corporate chiefs and agency representatives.
- Track record of uplifting, guiding, and expanding the capacity of staff members.
- Superior organizational capacity to navigate competing deadlines and deliver results in a dynamic work atmosphere.
- Constructive, flexible, and team-oriented approach to problem-solving.
- Unwavering dedication to educational justice, representation, and the purpose of Black Men Teach.
Physical Requirements:
- The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.
- The person in this position needs to be able to move about inside and outside different facilities (e.g., schools) or offices throughout the workday.
- The candidate is expected to attend conferences, meetings and training sessions both virtually and in-person.
Work Environment
- The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday. To support collaboration, community building, and teamwork, Black Men Teach requires staff to work on-site three days per week, Tuesday through Thursday. Mondays and Fridays are designated as remote workdays.
- This position operates in a collaborative, fast-paced hybrid work environment requiring frequent interaction with colleagues, partners, schools, and community stakeholders. The role requires flexibility, effective prioritization, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary range: $90,000-102,500. Final salary is determined by BMT based on years of experience, educational background, and level of expertise. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience. BMT offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support the whole person — your health, your future, and your life outside of work:
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance — BMT covers 75% of the employee premium and 65% of dependent premiums
- 401(k) retirement plan with up to 4% employer match
- Generous Paid Time Off, Sick Leave, and observed holidays
- Professional development opportunities aligned with your growth
- We offer a hybrid work environment that emphasizes flexibility, collaboration, and community connection.
