Health Care Assistant

The Position

Under the general supervision of the Health Services Manager, the shíshálh Nation Health Care Assistant will assist in daily living and personal care services in patients' homes in accordance with an established care plan developed by the Home Care Nursing team. The successful applicant will work with clients and families to address health, psychosocial, environmental and functional needs following the “home is best” model, which promotes independence and aims to improve patients’ quality of life in their homes.

The Candidate

• Assist in the delivery of client care under the functional direction of a Registered Nurse or other designate and in cooperation with interdisciplinary team members.
• Provide personal care to clients while following established care plans. This may include bathing, grooming, dressing, assisting with meals and oral hygiene and performing nursing care duties as applicable.
• Use techniques that enable the client to utilize their maximum ability while making personal choices. 
• Observe and monitor clients’ progress, symptoms and behavioural changes and reporting/recording significant observations.
• Administer medications to clients as prescribed by a physician.
• Utilize mechanical aids such as lifts, specialty beds, wheelchairs and assist with lifting and/or transferring of clients following established lifting/safety techniques.
• Ensure personal comfort and care of client/residents during completion of activities of daily living.
• Meet basic human needs related to elimination, hygiene, mobility, nutrition, recreation, rest, safety, social and spiritual needs.
• Assist with dressing and undressing, promoting the client/resident individuality, dignity and freedom of choice. Maintain a clean and safe environment for clients and staff. 
• Assist members at end of life to respect their spiritual journey and cultural wishes. 
• Perform other tasks within the scope of the position and as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

• Grade 10 (including English 10).
• Successful graduation from a recognized Health Care Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Eligible for registration with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and proficiently both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to deal with others effectively and respectfully.
• Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position. Ability to organize work.
• Knowledge of shíshálh Nation programs and services or willing to learn.
• Respect for, sensitivity towards, as well as knowledge and understanding of shíshálh culture and traditions.
• Knowledge of external services and service agencies.
• The ability to maintain confidentiality and deal with sensitive information is essential.
• Willing to participate in training and education as directed.
• Physical and mental ability to perform the duties of the position.
• Understanding and enthusiasm for community health programs.
• A valid driver’s license and a clean Criminal Record Check.
