Job Opportunity – Registered Nurse – Intermediate Care / Progressive Care – Wisconsin

Start Date: October 26, 2026

Location: Madison, Wisconsin

Schedule: Day/Evening shift, 12-hour shifts, 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM. Monday through Friday with every other weekend and some holidays required. This position rotates between two Intermediate Care units: Acute Medical/Progressive Care and Thoracic.

Highlights:

• Provide care to thoracic surgery patients including lung and esophageal disease management, lobectomies, decortications, esophagectomies, and cardiac surgery stepdown patients
• Patient ratio of 3:1 across all shifts with comprehensive interdisciplinary support including IV teams, respiratory services, physical therapy, pharmacy, and rapid response teams
• Epic EMR charting system utilized facility-wide
• Opportunity to assist with specialized procedures including chest tube insertion in the unit-based procedure room
• Work within a dynamic team focused on evidence-based nursing practices, innovation, and compassionate patient care

Requirements:

• Active Wisconsin RN license or Compact State RN license
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications (American Heart Association only)
• Minimum 2 years of acute care RN experience within the last 3 years in telemetry, oncology, cardiac, or PCU/IMC/Stepdown settings
• Ventilator and transplant patient experience required
• ICU or IMC and surgical post-operative experience required
• Trauma Level II experience required; Trauma Level I experience preferred
• Must successfully pass telemetry competency examination prior to start (strict passing criteria applies: 100% identification of lethal rhythms, no errors on 3rd degree heart blocks, and 80% overall passing score)
• Proficiency in Epic charting system required
• Must reside 50 miles or more from the facility

Essential Skills & Competencies:

• Cardiac telemetry interpretation and dysrhythmia management
• Arterial line management and ABG interpretation
• Central line, PICC line, and peripheral line care/management
• Accessing and managing ports
• Blood product administration and heparin protocols
• BiPAP/CPAP and high flow nasal cannula management
• Chest tube management (Emerson/PleurEvac)
• IV insulin protocol management and titration of vasoactive/insulin drips
• Pre/post cardiac catheterization and cardiac surgery care
• Wound care including wound vac management
• Starting and maintaining IVs, phlebotomy, and feeding tube care
• Non-invasive airway management and oxygen administration

Patient Population:

• Adult and geriatric patients
• Thoracic surgery patients including esophagectomies, lung volume reduction surgery, and wedge resection surgery
• Cardiac surgery stepdown patients
• Hospitalist and general medical patients
