Project Safety Coordinator

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THIS JOB (Summary)

The safety coordinator is to assist in the development of a comprehensive health and safety management system in such a way as to involve and receive support from the Corporate Safety Superintendent. He must then establish and implement a comprehensive site-specific responsibility matrix for the workplace in such a way as to maintain the lowest possible incidence of injuries and incidents.

COMPENSATION: $80,000 - $100,000 base salary plus bonus

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

• Assists and oversees the implementation of the project's health and safety management system in consultation with the project manager / superintendent and the Corporate Safety Superintendent
• Establishes a site-specific responsibility matrix which identifies the responsibilities of each project member at the project
• Provides health and safety and orientation training to newly hired employees.
• Coordinates First Aid training
• Assists the front-line supervisors with investigations and preparation of reports of all incidents /injuries or health and safety related conditions
• Conducts regular workplace inspections of all site facilities, both surface and underground and organizes regular safety meetings / safety huddles for site crews
• Ensures the thorough and timely completion of incident investigations and related reports
• Attends crew safety meetings on a regular basis and makes safety presentations as required

CLIENT RELATIONS

• Works closely with client representatives to ensure safety activities and training conducted by Subsurface Energy Resources operations personnel are compatible with client policies, procedures and activities
• Addresses client concerns in a timely manner working diligently to solve their problems/issues

SAFETY CONTROLS

• Ensures the accurate maintenance of records and statistics related to health, safety and first aid matters and reports on such to the project manager/ superintendent
• Ensures safety notices and signs are posted as required
• Ensures that fire extinguishers and fire suppression systems are inspected and maintained
• Conducts regular personal follow-ups with any injured employees
• Administers light duty and modified / alternate work programs
• Refers potential major problem areas to the project manager
• Conducts surveys of all safety equipment and makes recommendations for the improvement of same where appropriate
• Ensures that correct procedures are prepared and review with site crews
• Advises and assists the project management team with the preparation of job procedures and monitors compliance based on the monthly compliance report

REGULATOR COMPLIANCE/RELATIONS

• Provides advice to management on all government safety, health regulations and standards, aspects of the Mining Safety and Health Administration regarding mine and construction procedures
• Liaise with government inspectors and officials as required
• Accompany government inspectors and officials on safety tours

TRAINING

• Establishes health, safety, and first aid training and induction programs
• Ensures the accurate maintenance of records and statistics related to health, safety and first aid matters and reports on such to the project manager
• Assists in the development of in-house training programs for employees
• Keeps abreast of the Mining Safety and Health Administration and legislative changes

Certificate(s), License(s), Registration(s)

• MSHA Underground Certification required
• Cal/OSHA Experience Preferred

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• 5 to 10 years of related mining experience
