Description The mission of the Student Health & Well-Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well‑being for the student community, deliver equitable high quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors contributing to the academic success and personal development of all students. The UC San Diego SHW cluster, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well‑being center, and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans‑disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration (ADM), Strategic Planning, Innovation and Research (SPIR) and Assessments & Analytics (SHAA). SHS provides primary medical care, including urgent care and support services such as laboratory, pharmacy, and x‑ray to over 45,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. SHS staff consists of a diverse team of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, pharmacists, x‑ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistants, optometrists, medical assistants, health educators, administrative and other healthcare professionals. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well‑being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS oversees the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to self examination, peer review and quality control through the utilization of data, outcome and patient experience measurements. The Student Health Physician (MD/DO) is responsible for providing comprehensive primary health care services for acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, primarily for adolescent and young adult patients in both primary care and urgent care setting. The MD/DO will perform minor surgery, patient examination, evaluation, treatment and follow up care for both acute and chronic illness. The MD/DO will order appropriate lab and radiological testing and interpret test results. The MD/DO will manage reproductive healthcare including assessment, treatment, screening and counseling for family planning and gender‑affirming care. The MD/DO will assess and provide treatment and counseling for mental health conditions, including eating disorders. The MD/DO will provide patient education and counseling regarding general health maintenance and preventive recommendations. The MD/DO will prescribe medication accurately and appropriately. The MD/DO will provide professional supervision of nurse practitioners, instruct and educate trainees and/or staff and assist in public relations efforts. The MD/DO is required to complete compliance courses and programs that are mandated by UC San Diego, UC San Diego Health and SHS policies. Minimum Qualifications Current M.D. or D.O. degree including evidence of graduation from a fully‑accredited School of Medicine. Must possess the legal requirements to practice medicine and surgery as determined by the Medical Board of California and evidence of a current valid license. Must be Board Certified, actively participating in Maintenance of Certification in a Primary Care discipline Current valid Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Must be able to prescribe controlled substances by evidence of a current valid Federal Controlled Substances Registration (DEA) Certificate. Minimum of one year of provider‑level experience at a university student health center. Experience and skill in reproductive health preventive care: Pap smears, breast self‑examination, contraception, STI prevention and treatment; skill to perform pelvic examinations and participate in the management of family planning and gender‑affirming care. Skill in working with acute illnesses and injuries in an urgent care setting. Skill to perform minor surgery/procedures and wound care as delineated on the privileging form. Skill in managing time efficiently and exercising good judgment in establishing priorities, to appropriately address the relative importance of varying patient and clinic needs. Skill to communicate in a helpful, nonjudgmental, effective and informative manner, in person, by telephone, video conferencing or telehealth platform. Excellent interpersonal skills, tact, diplomacy, in order to interact effectively with all levels of professional staff and patients. Demonstrated knowledge and use of electronic medical records system for proper and timely documentation of patient‑related notes and accurate coding for billing. Strong organizational, problem‑solving and decision‑making skills. Demonstrated ability to expand and update skills and prior experience using a personal computer, software (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.) and standard business equipment and resources. Knowledge of community resources and public health requirements of the County of San Diego and the State of California. Ability to supervise and provide consultation to Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and other health care providers. Ability to serve a large volume of patients rapidly and effectively on a walk‑in or appointment basis within set time limits. Ability to provide supportive counseling to students and work well with them. Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and with diverse groups of people. Ability to inform and instruct effectively while working with individuals or groups. Ability to maintain confidentiality and compliance with department bylaws, policies & procedures, and applicable Federal and State laws related to HCQIA, HIPAA and FERPA. Ability to adhere to and practice the mandatory University Core Values & Safety Standards of performance, demonstrate at all times the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others; ability to uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and promote a positive and collaborative team environment. Complete and pass test/quiz for all required training assigned by UCOP, UCSD and SHW on a timely basis. Demonstrated commitment and ability to acknowledge, advocate and support the efforts to dismantle structural racism and divisive biases based on race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion and political beliefs. As appropriate, submit incident reports into the UCSD SHW Incident Report System, RL Datix or current system in use, to report near‑misses, process problems or patient or employee injury events. Attend required trainings and refreshers for use and proper steps to follow. Preferred Qualifications Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certificate. Training and experience in the evaluation, diagnosis, management and treatment of eating disorders. Special Conditions Evening and weekend hours as scheduled. A clear background check is required. Must complete initial mandatory health requirements, and current clear tuberculosis (TB) test results and influenza vaccination. In the absence of immunization records, titer test or blood test will be required to determine if other immunizations are needed. TB screening and influenza vaccination are required annually. Must complete initial credential verification and re‑credentialing every 3rd year thereafter. Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form will be required, as this position is listed as a mandated reporter under (CANRA). Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $192,839 - $383,711 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $92.36 - $183.77 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
