DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Student Health & Well‑Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well‑being for the student community, deliver equitable high‑quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of fostering healthy behaviors that contribute to the academic success and personal development of all students. The Student Health Physician (MD/DO) is responsible for providing comprehensive primary health care services for acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, primarily for adolescent and young adult patients in both primary care and urgent care settings. Responsibilities include performing minor surgery, examining and treating patients, ordering and interpreting lab and radiological tests, managing reproductive health care, assessing and treating mental health conditions, providing patient education, prescribing medication, supervising nurse practitioners, instructing trainees or staff, and contributing to public relations efforts. The physician is required to complete mandated compliance courses and programs under UC San Diego policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Current MD or DO degree with evidence of graduation from a fully accredited School of Medicine. Legal requirements to practice medicine and surgery in California and a current valid license. Board certified in a primary care discipline and actively participating in Maintenance of Certification. Current valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Current valid Federal Controlled Substances Registration (DEA) Certificate. Minimum of one year of provider‑level experience at a university student health center. Reproductive health preventive care experience: Pap smears, breast self‑examination, contraception, STI prevention and treatment; ability to perform pelvic examinations and participate in family‑planning and gender‑affirming care. Experience working in an urgent care setting with acute illnesses and injuries. Ability to perform minor surgery/procedures and wound care as delineated on the privileging form. Strong time‑management skills and judgment in establishing priorities for patient and clinic needs. Effective communication skills, non‑judgmental, helpful, in person, by telephone, video conferencing or telehealth platform. Proficiency in electronic medical records for accurate documentation and billing coding. Strong organizational, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills. Proficiency using a personal computer and standard business software (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.). Knowledge of community resources and public health requirements of San Diego County and California. Ability to supervise and consult with Nurse Practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare providers. Ability to serve a large volume of patients rapidly and efficiently in walk‑in or appointment settings. Supportive counseling skills and ability to work well with students. Team‑work skills and ability to cooperate with diverse groups. Ability to teach and instruct effectively with individuals or groups. Maintain confidentiality and comply with department bylaws, policies & procedures, and applicable federal and state laws (HCQIA, HIPAA, FERPA). Adhere to mandatory core values & safety standards, demonstrate professionalism, and uphold UCSD Principles of Community. Cultural competency and advocacy for diverse populations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proper business formats, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Complete and pass required training and qualifications through UCOP, UCSD, and SHW on a timely basis. Commitment to dismantle structural racism and biases based on protected characteristics. Submit incident reports using the UCSD SHW Incident Report System, RL Datix, or current system; attend required trainings and refreshers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certificate. Training and experience in the evaluation, diagnosis, management, and treatment of eating disorders.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Evening and weekend hours as scheduled. A clear background check is required. Completion of initial mandatory health requirements, current clear TB test results, influenza vaccination, and, if lacking records, a titer or blood test will be required to determine additional immunizations. TB screening and influenza vaccination are required annually. Initial credential verification and re‑credentialing every 3 years thereafter. Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form; position is a mandated reporter under CANRA. Ability to telecommute for work if operationally feasible as determined by the department. Job description periodically reviewed and may be revised as necessary. Employee may perform other related duties as required to meet ongoing needs of SHS.

PAY RANGE

Annual full pay range: $192,839 – $383,711 (pro‑rated if appointment less than 100%). Hourly equivalent: $92.36 – $183.77.
