Overview Grossing Technician I - Altamonte Springs, FL | Monday to Friday, 6:00 PM to 2:30 AM Pay : $23.34+ per hour. Some or all hours on second shift may receive a 10% shift differential and 15% for some or all hours on third shift. The individual will perform surgical gross examinations of small, uncomplicated specimens. The level of supervision for each specimen type will be determined by the technical supervisor and/or laboratory director. Responsibilities Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for histologic processing, according to policies and procedures. Ensure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling Maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification. Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings and sutures are mentioned. Gross low to moderately complex/complicated specimens under supervision (e.g., GI biopsies, EMC/ECC, uncomplicated skin biopsies, lipomas). Escalate non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to Pathologist Assistants or Pathologists. Record measurements, weight, volume and any abnormal findings as applicable. Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing. May be trained to perform basic Histology functions (embedding, microtomy, stains, frozen sectioning) if eligible per SOP. Prepare specimens on non-gynecological types, including cytopreparation and staining after training; includes FNA specimens. Complete all associated paperwork (workload recording, PM/temperature charts, etc.). Follow applicable laboratory procedures for job-related responsibilities. Interact with pathologists regarding gross dissection/description activities, including specimens requiring direct supervision. Identify problems that may affect test performance or reporting; correct or notify supervisor/manager. Ensure compliance with corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards. Maintain compliance with local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations. Maintain a clean and well-organized work area. Comply with Quest Diagnostics corporate continuing education requirements. Other duties as assigned by supervisor. Qualifications Required Work Experience Meets all requirements as outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Personnel Performing Tissue Gross Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489. 1 year of histology and/or grossing experience Physical and Mental Requirements Lifting and carrying objects: 1–10 lbs frequently; 11–25 lbs occasionally; 36–50 lbs seldom; over 50 lbs not to be lifted without assistance. Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods; frequent walking/standing. May require use of a wide variety of manual tools and laboratory apparatuses requiring dexterity.
