Laboratory Operating Supervisor

At Merrimack Health, we are committed to pay transparency and equity. The base salary range is $43.08 (Min) — $64.62 hourly (Max), excluding fringe benefits and potential bonuses.

Your final base salary will be determined based on your education, experience, licensure, and internal equity considerations. Offers are typically made below the top of the range to support future salary growth.

As the Laboratory Operating Supervisor, you will be asked to oversee laboratory operations to ensure that the activities of each technical department provide quality and efficiency through the effective supervision of staff. It promotes a positive, team-spirited, customer-focused image. Assists the Laboratory Director with tasks related to the general operation of the laboratory.

Duties And Responsibilities:

• Direct and coordinate daily operations of the Core Laboratory across the main hospital campus and satellite emergency center.
• Ensure timely, accurate, and efficient testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, and other core lab sections.
• Monitor workflow, staffing levels, and productivity to maintain optimal turnaround times (TAT).
• Collaborate with nursing, physicians, and other departments to support patient care needs.
• Supervise, mentor, and support 18 FTE Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) and Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT).
• Manage scheduling, staffing assignments, and workload distribution across both campuses.
• Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching, feedback, and disciplinary action as needed.
• Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Lead recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., CAP, CLIA, state, and federal regulations).
• Oversee quality control (QC), proficiency testing (PT), and quality assurance (QA) programs.
• Monitor quality indicators and implement corrective/preventive actions when necessary.
• Lead preparation for inspections and maintain inspection readiness at both sites.
• Develop and maintain staff training programs. Ensure completion of initial and ongoing competency assessments per regulatory requirements.
• Identify continuing education needs and support professional development.
• Maintain up-to-date procedure manuals and technical documentation. Communicate policy changes, updates, and performance expectations effectively.
• Oversee instrument maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and validation.
• Participate in evaluation, selection, and implementation of new instrumentation and methodologies.
• Coordinate service contracts and vendor relationships.
• Ensure proper validation and documentation for new assays and equipment.
• Assist in budget development and monitor operational expenses.
• Manage inventory control and reagent utilization to minimize waste.
• Evaluate cost-effectiveness of testing platforms and workflow processes.
• Analyze operational and quality metrics to identify improvement opportunities.
• Lead or participate in performance improvement initiatives. Implement process optimization strategies to enhance efficiency and patient outcomes.
• Support system-wide standardization across all campuses.
• Serve as liaison between laboratory leadership, hospital administration, and clinical teams.
• Participate in interdisciplinary committees and leadership meetings as needed.
