Typically, 7-24 hour shifts per month. Some days may include Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, but weekends may be covered by locums or full-time family practice providers, so weekend work is not consistent. Midwives are always off post-call. Opportunities to see patients in the Women's Clinic are available, but this is not the primary purpose of the midwives. There is a designated call room. Midwives triage all patients, admit, deliver uncomplicated vaginal deliveries, and perform discharges on non-cesarean section patients. Physicians are consulted on complicated patients, perform operative deliveries, and round on those patients. Currently, there are 5-6 births per day. With a new hospital opening, an increase in births is anticipated, but that will take several months. Midwives can work 2 shifts with 24 hours between shifts. Midwives deliver patients' babies in birthing centers, patients' homes, or hospital settings. They provide emotional support and guidance before, during, and after labor.
