Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

The CalSTRS IT Infrastructure & Operations Division is seeking a motivated individual to work as an Information Technology Specialist II within the IT Infrastructure Services Unit.


The IT Infrastructure and Operations Division manages the core technology infrastructure needed to support the CalSTRS business. This infrastructure includes client technology; network, servers, and storage infrastructure; and technology disaster recovery. The IT Infrastructure and Operations Division also provides technology related operational support for CalSTRS and is comprised of the following team: Client Technology Infrastructure, Audiovisual Services, Client Technology Services, Technology Disaster Recovery, Network Services, Infrastructure Services, Service Desk and System & Security Administration.


Under the general direction of the IT Infrastructure Services Manager, the Information Technology Specialist II will act as the Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, and is responsible for the administration, management, implementation, troubleshooting, and support of IT Infrastructure systems, including but not limited to servers, storage, load balancers, virtual private cloud and disaster recovery, with an emphasis on cybersecurity and protecting CalSTRS assets.


The Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer will work independently with minimal supervision and is responsible for the deployment, implementation, and support of secure cloud services and systems. The incumbent will be responsible for various Cloud Service systems, including but not limited to, Amazon Web Services, Azure Cloud Services, public cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, co-location environments, Active Directory, enterprise storage, authentication, PKI, and web-tier architecture solutions.


Collaborating with other technical engineers, the Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for providing expert level technical knowledge and leadership on cloud and cybersecurity best practices, IT Infrastructure technologies, as well as collaborating with project team members and vendor consultants for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the CalSTRS' on-premises and cloud IT environments. The Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer will ensure IT systems and solutions are in alignment with CalSTRS' business strategy and IT cybersecurity policy.


The position is required to be on a rotational standby status during evenings, weekends, and holidays to provide after-hours support for mission critical systems. After-hours support rotations will be scheduled in advance as much as possible.


The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineer or IT related field.
• Current Amazon Web Services (AWS) professional certificate (e.g. Solutions Architect Professional)
• At least 10 years of experience managing and supporting Windows server technologies.
• At least 10 years of experience administering backup system technologies (e.g., Commvault, Veeam, Rubrik, etc.)
• At least 10 years of experience implementing server provisioning automation, configuration automation, and infrastructure patching/upgrade orchestration.
• At least 10 years of experience doing hands-on troubleshooting and resolving complex infrastructure issues using tools like Tanium, CloudWatch, etc.
• At least 10 years of experience developing architecture diagrams, infrastructure design documents, maintenance & operation runbooks, etc.
• At least 5 years of experience in the last 10 years working in public clouds including AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud infrastructure.

Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.


In July 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025. This program reduces employees' monthly base pay in exchange for paid leave credits. This position is subject to PLP 2025 and will have a monthly base pay reduction of 3% in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits for the duration of the program. Working Conditions


CalSTRS offers a hybrid approach including in-office and remote work solutions based on business needs.


All staff of CalSTRS are employees of the State of California and subject to California employment taxes and withholdings. Upon appointment, staff are required to provide a current California address to CalSTRS Human Resources to be used as a remote work location.

Special Requirements Statement of Qualifications

CalSTRS Personal Trading Program


Investment Branch employees are required to participate in the CalSTRS Personal Trading Program which allows CalSTRS to monitor employees' personal trading transactions in order to reduce risks associated with insider trading, front running, and misusing material non-public information. Upon accepting a position within the Investment Branch, you will be required to disclose your personal broker account information and be required to utilize a personal broker from a designated list as provided by CalSTRS.


Background Investigation

Prior to employment with CalSTRS, a background investigation (BI) will be conducted. The BI consists of a Personal History Statement and fingerprinting through the Department of Justice. The BI will check criminal and civil records and, if applicable, verify education and check driving records.
