CNC Machinist

The CNC Machinist sets up and operates CNC turning and milling machines in a cell-based environment, working primarily with Mori Seiki and Doosan equipment. This role focuses on precision machining using mills and lathes, daily blueprint interpretation, and the use of precision measuring tools to ensure parts meet exact specifications. The machinist performs multiple setups per day, selects appropriate tooling and fixtures, and applies G and M code knowledge to produce high-quality components while maintaining safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate CNC turning and milling machines, including mills and lathes, within a cell-based production environment.
• Work on Mori Seiki and Doosan CNC machines, often running more than one machine at a time.
• Perform 13 setups per day, determining and installing the correct tooling, fixtures, and workholding for each job.
• Select appropriate tools, machines, and materials to prepare for machining operations.
• Set up, adjust, and operate basic machine tools and specialized or advanced variations to complete precision machining tasks.
• Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines to ensure stable and accurate machining.
• Interpret and use blueprints, drawings, sample parts, and engineering information daily to determine methods, sequences of operations, product dimensions, and tolerances.
• Apply knowledge of G and M codes to run and adjust CNC programs as needed for efficient and accurate production.
• Calculate dimensions and tolerances using mathematics and precision instruments such as micrometers, height stands, and calipers.
• Machine parts to specification using lathes, milling machines, and other machine tools, ensuring dimensional accuracy and surface quality.
• Measure, examine, and test completed units using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and pin gauges to detect defects and verify conformance to specifications.
• Monitor machine feed and speed during machining to maintain optimal cutting conditions and part quality.
• Observe and listen to operating machines and equipment to diagnose malfunctions and determine the need for adjustments or repairs.
• Check workpieces regularly to ensure they are properly lubricated and cooled throughout the machining process.
• Position and fasten workpieces securely in fixtures or chucks to maintain safety and accuracy.
• Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency after setups, adjustments, or repairs.
• Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter, supporting reliability and longevity.
• Advise internal stakeholders about the materials being used for finished products when needed.
• Confer with engineering, supervisory, manufacturing personnel, and cutting tool suppliers to exchange technical information and continuously improve tool life and machining processes.
• Design and create basic fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to support special engineering needs and process improvements.
• Operate one or more CNC machines daily while maintaining all quality and safety requirements.
• Recognize when equipment, processes, or parts are not functioning correctly or are likely to go wrong and promptly escalate or address issues.

Essential Skills

• At least 3 years of machining and/or CNC setup experience.
• Hands-on experience setting up and operating CNC mills and lathes.
• Ability to perform multiple daily setups and changeovers on CNC equipment.
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting basic blueprints and engineering drawings.
• Working knowledge of G and M codes for CNC programming and operation.
• Experience using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, and height stands.
• Strong understanding of machining processes, including turning and milling operations.
• Ability to calculate dimensions and tolerances using mathematics and measurement instruments.
• Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) concepts.
• Troubleshooting skills to recognize equipment or process issues and determine when adjustments or repairs are needed.
• Capability to lift, push, and pull up to 30 pounds as part of daily duties.
• Ability to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms for 8 or more hours per shift.
• Commitment to maintaining quality and safety requirements while operating CNC machinery.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in CNC cells and operating more than one machine at a time.
• Experience in CNC programming and changeover activities.
• Familiarity with SolidWorks for viewing or working with models and drawings.
• Experience with CAD/CAM software to support programming and tooling decisions.
• Ability to design and create basic fixtures and tooling for special engineering needs.
• Comfort working closely with engineering teams and cutting tool suppliers to improve tool life and machining processes.
• Strong communication skills to confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel and exchange technical information.
• Attention to detail and a proactive approach to recognizing potential problems before they impact production.

Work Environment

The role is based in a large manufacturing facility with multiple buildings, with work performed in one dedicated building in a CNC area organized into cells. You will typically work on more than one machine at a time within these cells. Shifts are available across three schedules: 1st shift runs from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; 2nd shift runs from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; and 3rd shift runs from 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. The environment centers on CNC machining using Mori Seiki and Doosan equipment, with regular use of precision measuring instruments and standard shop tools. The dress code consists of jeans and a work shirt, suitable for a hands-on, production-focused setting where safety, cleanliness, and equipment care are important daily priorities.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $51500.00 - $61672.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
