Senior Director, AI Engineering - Agentic AI

Salary: $286,200 - 326,700 per year Requirements:

• We require a bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or AI, plus at least 10 years of experience developing or leading AI and ML algorithms or technologies, or a masters degree plus at least 8 years of similar experience.
• We require at least 5 years of people leadership experience.
• We prefer 7 years of experience managing and leading an engineering team.
• We prefer 8 years of experience delivering scalable, responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or comparable private cloud environments.
• We prefer experience building AI and ML capabilities such as LLM inference, similarity search, vector databases, guardrails, or memory systems.
• We prefer a masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or another relevant technical discipline.
• We prefer strong knowledge of current AI research and systems, with the ability to apply emerging techniques thoughtfully in production.
• We prefer excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to explain complex AI topics to peers.

• We partner with engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered products that reshape how our associates work and how our customers engage with Capital One.
• We oversee the design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support of AI software components, including foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.
• We make strategic build-versus-buy decisions across a wide range of open-source and SaaS AI technologies, including AWS Ultraclusters, Hugging Face, VectorDBs, NeMo Guardrails, PyTorch, and related tools.
• We invent and implement advanced LLM optimization techniques to improve scalability, cost efficiency, latency, and throughput in large-scale production AI systems.
• We help shape the technical vision and long-term roadmap for foundational AI systems at Capital One.
• We attract, develop, and retain top AI talent while supporting personal and professional growth across the team.
• We foster a culture of learning and ensure we stay current with leading-edge developments in AI.
• We are hands-on when needed, lead by example, and help bring clarity to complex, ambiguous problems.
