Inspector I

Inspector I is an integral member of the Community Risk Division (CRD), working under the direct supervision of the Deputy Fire Marshal. This role combines administrative, technical, and public service responsibilities to support fire prevention, code compliance, and public education efforts. Inspector I ensures compliance with local, state, and federal fire prevention codes, laws, and ordinances while assisting with public education programs and maintaining accurate records. This position requires a high level of professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to interact effectively with the public, contractors, and other stakeholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Customer Service and Communication:

• Answer incoming telephone calls in a friendly and polite manner, route calls to appropriate personnel, and properly handle any requests for emergency assistance or other customer service that may be required.
• Greet the public in a friendly and polite manner; ascertain the nature of business and direct the public to appropriate personnel positively and professionally.
• Prepare outgoing mail using the postage meter, receive and sort incoming mail. Run monthly postage meter account reports.
• Intake of permits, assisting through the process, collection of needed documents, and payments.
• Provide information to contractors and the community regarding permit processes, fire protection systems, and fire code regulations

Inspection and Compliance:

• Conduct inspections and re-inspections of new and existing commercial, industrial, and residential buildings to identify fire hazards and ensure compliance with fire codes.
• Perform acceptance tests for fire protection systems, including alarms, sprinklers, and extinguishers.
• Conduct defensible space and burn permit inspections.
• Investigate complaints regarding fire code violations and recommend corrective actions.
• Prepare detailed fire inspection reports, hazardous material summaries, and other correspondence.
• Maintain accurate records in the CRD Inspection and Occupancy Databases.
• Issue permits, warnings, and notices of violation as necessary.
• Conduct follow-up assessments to verify compliance with fire codes and applicable statutes.

Public Education and Training:

• Assist with public education programs, including fire prevention and life-safety classes for schools, community groups, contractors, and architects.
• Provide training for fire personnel on fire and building codes and commercial inspection practices.

General Duties:

• Perform maintenance of stations and grounds to ensure cleanliness and safety.
• Attend regular training sessions to stay current on fire prevention methods and codes.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of fire prevention codes, inspection techniques, and fire protection systems. Ability to review and interpret building plans.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite or other information management databases
• Well-developed administrative skills, time management, interpersonal communications, and attention to detail.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• 3+ years of customer service experience, administrative work, and/or applicable trade work
• Valid driver's license
• Must possess or obtain within 90 days:
  • ICS-100/200
  • NIMS-700/800
  • CPR/AED certification
• Must obtain within a year and/or maintain the following certifications:
  • SFE Inspector I
  • IFC Inspector I or equivalent
  • CDFPC Fire Inspector I

Preferred Qualifications:

• Associate's degree or higher

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

• May require evening and weekend availability for community events and emergencies.
• Office and fieldwork environments with occasional exposure to hazardous situations.
• Mobility to move to and from various points within the facilities as well as mobility within the outdoor environment; Ability to lift and/or carry 10-40 lbs.
• Ability to sit, type, copy, reach overhead, and reach away from the body.
• Ability to produce information in written form.
