Building Inspector

Position Overview Jefferson County is seeking experienced Building Inspectors. Candidates should have a keen eye for detail, direct experience in the permitting, installation, and alteration of construction projects, ideally in both residential and commercial applications. Experience with structural/building inspections including wildfire hardening and/or plumbing and mechanical installations is highly desirable. Why This Role? Responsibilities The Building Inspector is responsible for performing technical inspection work throughout the county, inspecting various structures (industrial, commercial, residential, etc.) to ensure compliance with building codes. The Inspector reviews blueprints, diagrams, and plans, and evaluates structures in progress and in final form to ensure compliance. Failed inspections require issuing correction notices and stop‑work orders, and the role must explain these notices and building codes to officials, agencies, the public, and respond to complaints regarding potential violations. Essential Duties Driving throughout the county to perform various types of inspections (plumbing, mechanical, structural/building, wildfire hardening, etc.). Use of ladder and lift 50–100 lbs. of material as needed for fieldwork. Ensuring compliance with current building safety codes. Interpreting plans and issuing written code interpretations. Working with the Sheriff’s Office and fire departments to evaluate hazardous conditions where appropriate. Explaining product installation requirements and clarifying technical codes. Issuing corrections and stop‑work orders. Ensuring adherence of scope of work to accepted plans and documents. Maintaining accurate records, forms, and reports in conjunction with field inspections. Providing customer field training on construction procedures and code interpretations. Providing administrative backup for office staff (answering phones, scheduling inspections, clarifying written notices, explaining policies and procedures, etc.). Testifying in court when required. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Understanding of, or willingness to learn, applicable building safety codes. Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Three years of work‑related or volunteer‑related experience. None (certifications/licenses). Additional Qualifications Residential Plumbing Inspector Certificate required within 1 year of hire. International Code Council Certification as a Residential or Commercial Inspector required within 1 year of hire. Preferred Qualifications 5 to 6 years of building inspection experience. Residential inspection experience. Experience with the AMANDA database or similar. Compensation & Benefits Hiring range: $33.44 – $41.80 – $50.16 USD hourly. Compensation will be determined based on education, experience, and skills.
