General Job Description : Under general supervision, the Health Educator leads public health education initiatives; plans, conducts, and evaluates special and continuing programs; may supervise subordinates; performs related duties as required. Nature of Position : Requires sustained physical effort, walking, bending, stooping, occasional exposure to hazards, computer workstation work; may require evenings and weekends. Examples of Important and Essential Duties : Acts as health education specialist to inter- and intra-departmental divisions across prevention spectrum, including policy development, systems change, coalition building, community mobilization, and education of providers, community members, and individuals. Supervises Assistant Health Educators, interns, or other staff. Supports staff for DPH and community coalitions focused on culturally relevant prevention and promotion projects. Plans, organizes, conducts, evaluates training programs for DPH employees, SF Health Network, and partners. Develops communication plans and produces and updates printed and electronic materials. Stays informed of current public‑health trends and represents the department in professional and community affairs. Partners with community organizations, provides technical assistance, attends meetings, acts as technical advisor, arranges meetings, recruits volunteers. Analyzes and utilizes data for policy analysis, program planning and evaluation. Prepares strategic plans, reports to funders, grant proposals, position papers, quality‑improvement activities, and other key documents. Communicates with supervisor and leadership regarding assignments, problems, progress. Attends staff meetings at branch, division, and department levels. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications (Required) Education: Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Health Education accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), or completion of four courses (min. 10 semester units or 15 quarter units) in program planning/evaluation, community assessment/intervention, public health education/social behavior theory, community organization/promotion, group process, training fundamentals, culture/ethnic diversity, eliminating health disparities/inequities, community-based research methods, and and corresponding. (Required) Experience: At least 6 months (1040 hours) of health educator experience during or after Master’s program in a public or community health setting.
