Job Title
This position is grant funded. Therefore, it is solely dependent on the availability of grant funds.
Provides direct patient support by obtaining vital signs, performing phlebotomy, and assisting with basic clinical procedures. Contributes to patient-centered care by supporting health promotion, disease prevention, and wellness education, particularly for individuals at risk for or living with chronic conditions such as diabetes. Delivers training and guidance on disease self-management, nutrition, and physical activity to encourage healthier lifestyles. Promotes wellness and enhances quality of life through improved patient awareness, early intervention, and preventive care services, while ensuring a safe, professional, and compassionate clinical environment.
Essential Functions/Job Competencies/Physical Requirements
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Register patients and program participants; collect intake forms; maintain and update medical and program records; ensure confidentiality in handling all participant information.
- Answer phone calls, emails, and inquiries related to laboratory services and health programs; communicate test results and program information clearly and accurately.
- Conduct basic health screenings, such as blood pressure, blood glucose, height, weight, and BMI; accurately document results in patient charts and program tracking systems.
- Perform blood draws, order laboratory tests, and ensure information is entered accurately; conduct blood draws from homebound patients as needed.
- Collect and perform laboratory tests as directed; process patient charges for lab work utilizing internal software; compile and distribute reports as necessary.
- Prepare, maintain, and ensure the proper functioning of laboratory and screening supplies and equipment (e.g., glucometers, lancets, cuffs, sanitizing tools); maintain office and medical supply inventories and order additional materials as needed.
- Disinfect and sanitize laboratory and office areas, including equipment and furniture, in accordance with safety and infection-control protocols.
- Provide administrative and operational support to program and laboratory staff, including filing, data entry, report preparation, and inventory management.
- Assist with preparation and delivery of group classes, workshops, and health education sessions by creating handouts, organizing sign-in sheets, setting up presentations, and supporting program staff during sessions.
- Welcome participants, explain procedures clearly, respond to questions, and distribute educational materials on healthy living, nutrition, physical activity, and other relevant program topics.
- Coordinate and schedule appointments for screenings, follow-ups, program classes, and laboratory services; monitor and record attendance and participation for accurate reporting.
- Participate in outreach events and community engagement activities, which may occur outside regular hours or on weekends, to promote health education and program awareness.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support laboratory services, health education, and overall program goals.
- Support supervisory direction with professionalism and adaptability, fostering clarity and shared understanding to avoid potential misalignments.
- Ability to fulfill off-site work duties by operating a City vehicle or, if approved, a personal vehicle with eligibility for mileage reimbursement in accordance with City policy.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Six (6) months of educational training
- At least one (1) year of experience in medical office assistant, phlebotomy, or health related field
Proof of TB Test/Screening will be required to be presented prior to employment
Valid Licenses and Certifications
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Medical Office Assistant or Medical Assistant Certification. Must attach copy of the certification to your application.
- Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
