Position Title MEDICAL REFERRAL COORDINATOR Posting Information Posting Number: SRGV9013 Number of Vacancies: 2 FTE: 1.0 Employment Category: Full-Time FLSA: Non-Exempt Location: School of Medicine/Revenue Cycle, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Position Available Date: 07/06/2026 Grant Funded Position: No Minimum Salary: Commensurate with Experience Posted Salary: Commensurate with Experience Scope of Job Responsible for managing and coordinating incoming and outgoing patient referrals within UT Health RGV and to external community healthcare facilities and providers. The role facilitates seamless transfer of UT Health RGV patients to specialists, ensuring timely access to necessary medical services. Responsibilities Manage and coordinate incoming and outgoing patient referrals within UT Health RGV and external community healthcare facilities. Collaborate with healthcare providers to assess patients’ needs and determine appropriate referrals. Consult with physicians and patients to make informed referral decisions. Schedule specialist appointments, diagnostic tests, and procedures for patients. Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient referrals, including referral forms and documentation of communication. Coordinate appointment times, locations, and any necessary pre‑visit requirements. Address patient questions and concerns related to referrals. Monitor and track the status of patient referrals, ensuring that appointments are kept and results are received. Analyze and generate reports on referral activity, including tracking referral outcomes and referral volume. Verify patient insurance coverage and confirm any required authorizations have been obtained for specialist visits and diagnostic tests. Coordinate with corresponding providers to process prescription refill requests as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervision General supervision from assigned supervisor. Direct supervision of assigned staff. Required Education High school diploma or GED. Preferred Education None. Licenses/Certifications Preferred: Medical Assistant certification. Required Experience Two (2) years of related experience performing duties stated above or medical assistant experience in a medical office or healthcare setting. Preferred Experience Certified medical assistant experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical software. Knowledge of navigating payer portals. Equipment Use of standard office equipment and payer portal such as Epic. Working Conditions Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. Some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Requires a strong understanding of payer requirements, referral workflows, and payer system functionality, along with working knowledge of medical terminology, specialty services, and patient coordination. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to manage high-volume workflows while ensuring timely, accurate processing of referrals.
