Mathematician for AI Research Collaboration

Contribute frontier-level mathematical expertise to train and evaluate advanced AI systems that must reason like active research mathematicians. You will work on problems and model outputs across a broad range of pure and applied mathematics, including number theory, algebra, algebraic geometry, topology, analysis, PDEs, probability, combinatorics, dynamical systems, logic, representation theory, mathematical physics, and related areas of theoretical computer science and statistics. Successful contributors will have research at the frontier and will help the team detect subtle, research-level errors and gaps in model reasoning.

• Review and evaluate research papers in mathematics for correctness, novelty, and rigor.
• Author and review challenging mathematics problems and tasks used to train and evaluate frontier AI models.
• Evaluate model outputs on tasks such as proof construction, verification, problem solving, formalization, and conjecture exploration.
• Identify and document where current models fail, including subtle errors a working mathematician would catch, for example unjustified steps, misapplied hypotheses, hand-waved lemmas, or proofs that are plausible but incorrect.
• Collaborate with a small program team and other senior contributors to refine tasks, evaluations, and research priorities.

• Evidence of research excellence in mathematics or closely related fields. Examples include first-author or sole-author publications in venues such as Annals of Mathematics, Inventiones Mathematicae, Journal of the AMS, Acta Mathematica, Duke Mathematical Journal, Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, Geometry & Topology, JEMS, GAFA, Advances in Mathematics, or Probability Theory and Related Fields. For adjacent fields, top-tier venues such as STOC, FOCS, SODA, or Annals of Statistics also qualify.
• A doctorate or postdoctoral training from a top-20 global institution in mathematics or a related STEM field is typical.
• Recognition through competitive fellowships or honors is valued, for example Clay Research Fellowship, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship or NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship, Sloan Research Fellowship, Packard Fellowship, Simons Fellowship or Investigatorship, AMS Centennial Fellowship, Hertz Fellowship, Marshall or Rhodes Scholarship, New Horizons in Mathematics Prize, Salem Prize, or Ramanujan Prize. Earlier-career applicants may point to Putnam Fellow placement or an International Mathematical Olympiad medal.
• Holding an NSF CAREER award or comparable grant as a named Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator is relevant experience.
• Current or recent experience in active research roles, such as PhD candidate, postdoctoral researcher, instructor, faculty member, principal researcher, or industry research mathematician.
• Outstanding senior PhD students and recent graduates with strong publication records are strongly encouraged to apply, the depth of research output matters more than years of experience.

• Part-time engagement, up to 20 hours per week.
• Remote work placement, as part of the extended workforce at a leading AI research lab.
• This role is an hourly engagement.

The pay rate is between 80 and 110 hourly. Compensation will reflect research seniority and credentials.

We are assembling a select cohort of accomplished mathematicians. Placement with client teams depends on current project needs and available slots at partnering research labs. Opportunities are for contributors whose research sits at the frontier; assignments will involve placement within a client team.
