Assistant, Associate, Full Professor (Tenured or Tenure Track)

The Department of Biochemistry () at the University of Wisconsin–Madison invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, faculty position. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) and its application to biological systems or development of new NMR methods and technology. We welcome candidates committed to democratizing access to NMR through community engagement, outreach, and training in the tradition of the National Magnetic Resonance Facility at Madison (NMRFAM).

The successful candidate will join a strong and collaborative department with broad and complementary strengths across the biochemical sciences. Current research areas include structural biology, virology, metabolism, gene regulation, cell and molecular biology, chemical biology, biophysics, systems biology, synthetic biology and computational biology. The department fosters a highly interactive environment, with a culture of collaboration and intellectual exchange that supports interdisciplinary research and innovation.

The position is an academic (9-month) tenure-track (junior) or tenured (mid-career or senior) faculty position. The successful applicant will be expected to establish an ambitious, externally funded research program and contribute to our core missions of undergraduate and graduate teaching and service.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Developing and directing a well-recognized and extramurally funded research program; working collaboratively to develop NMRFAM technology, user outreach and training programs; teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses and contributing to curriculum updates and innovations to educate a diverse student body; mentoring graduate students and supervising their research; participating in departmental and university faculty governance; contributing to professional and public service, and participating in interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts with other departments, schools, and colleges.

Preferred Qualifications: Education:

Required: PhD in biochemistry or a relevant biological science, physical science, or engineering discipline.

NMRFAM has a 40 year history of being at the forefront of biological NMR research in the US. NMRFAM is dedicated to making cutting-edge NMR instruments and methods available to all scientists; to developing new NMR instrumentation, methods and data analysis; and to making NMR accessible to biological science researchers without significant NMR expertise. This mission, namely to make the technology, data analysis, and training available to UW-Madison faculty, staff and students, and researchers from the state of Wisconsin and across the United States, strives to embody the Wisconsin Idea in a format appropriate for this highly advanced technology.

NMRFAM has been very successful in obtaining large NIH and NSF grants for both user program support and technology development. Faculty associated with NMRFAM are expected to contribute to development of new technology, user outreach, and our training mission. Significant investments by the Biochemistry Department, CALS, and our recent NSF award for the 1.1 GHz NMR have greatly increased the solid-state NMR capabilities of NMRFAM. The ideal candidate would have a research focus in this area to make best use of the available instrumentation. They will collaborate with other NMRFAM faculty and staff to lead NMRFAM technology development, keep NMRFAM at the forefront of the field, attract top staff and students, and lead the US biological NMR community.
