Job Description
This Phlebotomist II role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections while also supporting specimen processing, troubleshooting issues, and recommending workflow improvements. You will work primarily with adult and geriatric patients, with additional pediatric responsibilities, and will travel between multiple clinic locations. The position requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, excellent customer service, critical thinking, and the ability to manage a high volume of draws independently.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, efficient, and professional manner.
- Collect blood and other specimens, including urine and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and clinical protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Label specimen tubes accurately and match them to laboratory requisition forms to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Centrifuge, split, label, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as needed to maintain a clean and safe work area.
- Update patient information accurately in the system or on documentation as required.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to verify accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens securely for transport, following all procedures required to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes.
- Follow specific procedures and protocols for labeling and transporting specimens to preserve quality and compliance.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Attend required annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and safety standards.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results as needed to respond to inquiries.
- Draw and process specimens for adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients, including performing heel sticks on babies when required.
- Handle a workload of approximately 30–40 blood draws per shift while maintaining accuracy, quality, and patient care standards.
- Work independently across multiple clinic locations and adapt to different clinical settings and workflows.
- Participate in troubleshooting and make recommendations to improve workflow and efficiency within the phlebotomy and specimen processing processes.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience as a phlebotomist.
- Pediatric through geriatric blood draw experience, including at least 1–2 years of experience with heel sticks on babies.
- Proficiency in venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Demonstrated experience performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, and updating patient information.
- Ability to collect, store, and process specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
- Ability to work independently and manage 30–40 blood draws per shift.
- Strong multitasking abilities and critical thinking skills to manage workflow and resolve issues.
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and colleagues.
- Understanding of physicians’ orders and the ability to accurately interpret and follow them.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Reliable means of transportation to travel between clinic sites.
- Experience processing specimens after drawing, including centrifuging, splitting, labeling, and freezing as required by test orders.
- Experience working in a variety of clinical settings and adapting to different workflows and patient populations.
- Comfort working primarily with adults and geriatric patients while also performing pediatric collections.
- Strong attention to detail in matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying orders.
- Ability to handle telephone inquiries and read laboratory results accurately to provide information when appropriate.
This role is based out of a primary patient service center in downtown Chicago, where initial training will take place for approximately the first two weeks. After training, the phlebotomist will travel regularly to multiple clinic locations in the surrounding areas, including sites in Skokie, Harvey, South Holland, Oak Brook, and Naperville. The position offers the opportunity to work in a variety of clinic settings, providing exposure to different patient populations and operational environments. The schedule is provided one week in advance, so you will know in which location you are expected to report. Availability is required Monday through Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., with rotating Saturday shifts typically between 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. When scheduled to work a Saturday, you will receive a day off during the week. The work involves frequent travel between sites, regular use of phlebotomy and laboratory equipment such as needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen transport containers, and adherence to strict safety, handling, and regulatory protocols to maintain specimen integrity and a safe clinical environment.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.
