Academic Advisor The Academic Advisor supports prospective and current students in CCEESS programs by providing thoughtful academic, admissions, career, and student-success guidance. This position helps students understand program requirements, navigate registration and university resources, develop educational plans, and overcome academic challenges while contributing to outreach, retention, orientation, and program support. The role advances BYU's advising mission through informed, confidential, student-centered service. Please note: This is a part-time position (28 hours per week). Must be available to work Monday through Friday between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Specific work hours and scheduling expectations will be discussed during the interview process. Pay Grade: 50 Typical Starting Pay: $52,500 - $68,000 The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate's job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range. Required Documents: All Staff positions require a resume. What you'll do in this position:
- Provide academic and admissions advisement to prospective and admitted CCEESS students and, when appropriate, their family members, including guidance on admission criteria, Honor Code expectations, curriculum, transfer planning, career and graduate-school exploration, and alternative educational opportunities.
- Help students build and implement educational plans aligned with their academic, career, and life goals; provide strategic registration guidance; recommend courses; and support students through registration and other university processes.
- Monitor student progress and retention, identify students who are not making satisfactory progress, create Academic Improvement Plans when required, and determine appropriate outreach, support, referrals, and follow-up.
- Research and provide accurate information on university resources and student aid, including financial aid, scholarships, BGS or FlexGE assistance, campus attendance options, and other services; assist with petitions, substitutions, capstone registration approval, and graduation-clearance recommendations.
- Maintain quality and current advising resources and records, access confidential student information through university databases such as AIM and MyMap, and ensure advising practices meet applicable university, CCEESS, and professional standards while adhering to FERPA requirements.
- Conduct assessment and research on advising issues and successful practices; contribute student feedback to annual program assessment; assist faculty and Continuing Education staff with advising-related issues; and support department operations.
- Manage student outreach and connection efforts, including deadline and registration communications, weekly newsletter coordination, semester contact efforts, student council advising, and in-person and online new-student orientation and community activities.
- Plan and participate in recruitment and outreach events such as booths, college fairs, high-school events, BYU activities, and community events; build relationships that encourage student engagement and retention.
- Support department financial-assistance and scholarship processes, assist with training and supervision of student advisors, and serve as a backup for full-time advisors and program administrators.
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
- Skilled in the use of computers and databases, with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to learn and apply advising and general counseling skills, including assessing student knowledge, making appropriate recommendations and referrals, managing stress and conflict, and helping students identify obstacles and develop solutions and goals.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with students in person and by email.
- Ability to learn and apply university policies and procedures.
- Ability to assist students and parents who may be experiencing significant stress in a courteous, helpful, and appropriately assertive manner.
- Ability to manage multiple complex tasks and projects, make independent decisions, and work under pressure.
- Ability to understand and maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA requirements.
- Master's degree.
- Previous advising experience.
- Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of student development issues and concerns.
- 401k. BYU automatically contributes 8% at no cost to you. Additionally, if you contribute 5%, BYU adds an additional 4% (Rehires may qualify for different retirement plans)
