DESCRIPTION OF WORK

REPORTS TO: The Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.
An incumbent in this position may be designated as ELECTRIC LINEMAN CREW LEADER, 1ST CLASS, 2ND CLASS, OR APPRENTICE LINEMAN dependent upon the qualification, experience and knowledge of the selected applicant. This position requires residency within acceptable reception and transmission range of the City's 800 MHz radio system (approximately 20 miles). SALARY RANGE: $24.12-$36.18 per hour (Apprentice Lineman) $27.92-$41.89 per hour (2nd Class Lineman ) $29.32-$43.98 per hour (1st Class Lineman ) $30.79-$46.18 per hour (Crew Leader Lineman )

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, climbs poles/structures, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed outdoors, in all types of weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, and dirt. The work requires the use of protective devices such as safety glasses, FR clothes, and Rubber Gloves. Must be able to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime and be on a rotating schedule to standby to be called in to work after normal working hours.

- Required to advance to a 2nd Class Lineman within two years of date of hire and to 1st Class Lineman within 5 years after becoming a 2nd Class Lineman
2nd Class Lineman:
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Class "A" Drivers License or ability to readily obtain within 6 months.
- Required to satisfactorily develop job knowledge and skills to be promoted to 1st Class Lineman within five years of date of hire. Failure to satisfy this requirement will result in discharge from employment.
1st Class Lineman:
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education or equivalent
- Experienced in performing electric line construction and maintenance on electrical facilities energized at primary and secondary voltages.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Class "A" Drivers License or ability to readily obtain within 6 months.
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education or equivalent.
