Network Operations Center Technician

Job Summary The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) provides core IT infrastructure services to the university, develops and implements services for the campus, and manages the state‑wide higher education network and regional networks. As part of the Systems and Networking Control Center team, the Network Operations Center Technician monitors critical IT systems and networks, ensuring seamless connectivity 24/7/365. This role supports students, faculty, researchers, and partners across Wisconsin and beyond, working the third shift from 11:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. An initial training period of up to six months is required, followed by permanent duties that may include on‑call rotations and holiday shift assignments. Work locations may be 100% remote, partially remote, or fully on‑site, contingent on a flexible work arrangement approved annually. Remote work requires a reliable high‑speed internet connection and a university‑provided computer; transportation between home and work location is not reimbursable. Key Job Responsibilities Monitors hosted systems using vendor supplied, off‑the‑shelf, and custom tools, and addresses alerts according to established protocols. Monitors multiple communication channels—including chat rooms, email, and telephone—for incident response updates and planned system changes. Performs necessary changes to the campus DNS system following industry standard hostmaster protocols based on customer requests. Performs necessary changes to enterprise storage systems following established protocols and requests. Monitors local and wide‑area networks using a variety of tools and addresses alerts according to established protocols. Required Qualifications Foundational networking knowledge, including the OSI model, TCP/IP, subnets/VLANs, and routing/switching concepts. Basic familiarity with major server operating systems, primarily Linux and Windows Server, with command‑line comfort and routine troubleshooting. Strong understanding of ITIL or similar principles (ISO/IEC 20000, COBIT, etc.) and hands‑on experience with IT service management platforms such as Cherwell, ServiceNow, or Ivanti Neurons. Strong operational awareness, ability to follow runbooks, monitor complex infrastructure, and communicate clearly in a 24/7 operations setting. Hostmaster fundamentals: familiarity with DNS concepts (zones, records, delegation), DHCP basics, and routine updates and troubleshooting in enterprise DNS/DHCP environments. Preferred Qualifications Operational knowledge of working in a large and complex IT environment with decentralized service delivery and varied stakeholders.
