Senior Plant Mechanical Estimator

Job Roles and Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed mechanical and process utility cost estimates for central utility plants and process systems
• Develop estimates from conceptual design through complete construction documents
• Perform quantity takeoffs from drawings, P&IDs, specifications, and equipment schedules
• Build cost models for plant equipment, piping systems, and controls
• Create assemblies and system-level pricing for complex utility systems
• Coordinate subcontractor and vendor bid solicitation, analysis, and scope reviews
• Identify scope gaps, overlaps, and project risk areas
• Support subcontractor buyout and final vendor selection
• Develop and maintain project budgets, GMPs, contingencies, and cost plans
• Track estimate-to-budget alignment and perform cost impact analysis
• Collaborate with engineers, facility owners, and project teams during design reviews
• Lead value engineering and cost reduction strategies
• Identify constructability, schedule, and cost risks and develop mitigation strategies
• Prepare estimate narratives, bid comparisons, and executive presentations
• Maintain estimating databases and historical cost records
• Mentor estimators, junior estimators, and interns as needed

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and/or equivalent combination of 15+ years of technical training and construction experience
• Experience in the local construction market
• Strong knowledge of regional construction costs and pricing
• Knowledge of construction contracts required
• Strong organizational, supervisory, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
• Experience in construction estimating and related functions preferred
• Knowledge of commissioning and start-up requirements
• Strong time management and prioritization skills
• High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
• Advanced management or technical training preferred
• Strong knowledge of HVAC, hydronic systems, steam, chilled water, condenser water plants, process piping, and utility systems
• Experience estimating design-build and GMP projects
• Proficiency with estimating and takeoff software such as Sage, OST, Bluebeam, and Excel
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, one-lines, mechanical/electrical plans, specifications, and equipment schedules
• Ability to lead estimating efforts on applicable projects
