Sign Language Educational Interpreter II

Role Educational Interpreter II provides sign language services for students, faculty, staff, families, and community stakeholders eligible through FCPS. Essential Functions Interpret and transliterate information to accurately convey thoughts, intent, and spirit of the sender in the communication mode determined by the IEP team. Interpret and transliterate situations outside the classroom as appropriate and assigned. Foster appropriate use of an interpreter in a variety of settings. When interpreting for all other stakeholders eligible: interpret/transliterate information accurately conveying thought, intent, and spirit in the preferred mode. Coordinate facility logistics: position self for the best line of sight, advocate closed captioning and other technology devices. Maintain professional growth: prepare materials effectively, collaborate with other interpreters, attend professional development sessions. Comply with the Code of Ethics set by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Participate in providing educators with general information about social, emotional, and cultural aspects of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing; share best practices; attend IEP meetings or provide information when requested; maintain regular and predictable attendance. Required Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent. Fluent in Sign Language. Completion of an interpreter training program from a higher education institute or three years of successful experience as a sign language interpreter may be used in lieu of a training program. Certification from one or more of the following: Registry of the Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS), Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), National Association of the Deaf (NAD). Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. Preferred Qualifications Background in an educational setting. Classroom interpreting experience. Familiarity with FCPS policies, goals and programs.
