Maintenance Worker IThe City of Bellflower is hiring part-time Maintenance Worker I's in the Public Works Department. These are part-time, non-benefited positions scheduled up to a maximum of 29 hours per week. This recruitment will close when 75 applications have been received or on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 12:00 p.m., whichever occurs first. The recruitment may close at any time. Applicants best qualified based on their applications and supplemental responses will be invited to the testing process.Definition: Under direct or general supervision, performs a variety of work in the construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of City infrastructure, including streets, parks, landscaped areas, and facilities; uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power-driven equipment; and performs related work as required.Supervision Received and Exercised: Receives direct or general supervision from a Public Works Supervisor. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.Class Characteristics: This is the entry-level class in the public works maintenance series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn City infrastructure and facilities, use of tools and equipment, and public works practices and procedures. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.Examples Of DutiesWhen performing streets maintenance assignment:Performs construction, maintenance, and repair activities of City streets, right of ways, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, landscaped areas, bridges, traffic and street sign installation, repair, and reflectivity, pavement markings, and stormwater and drainage systems, to ensure safe and efficient access for the public.Participates in asphalt maintenance and repairs, including grading, scraping, and leveling surfaces in preparation of areas to be repaved; fills and patches pot holes, cracks, and service laterals; repairs curbs, gutters, and manholes; removes debris from the streets and right of way.Installs, repairs, and cleans storm drains, catch basins, and culverts.Participates in concrete maintenance, including attending to trip hazards, demolishing and removing concrete, and forming, pouring, and finishing sidewalks, sidewalk ramps, curbs, and gutters.Performs a variety of maintenance duties of landscaped areas such as street medians, islands, and sidewalks, including planting, irrigating, fertilizing, and maintaining trees; performing weed abatement using a chemical sprayer; irrigating, aerating, mowing, and fertilizing turf; trimming walls; removing fallen trees and limbs, stumps, and related debris; and maintaining and repairing irrigation systems.Maintains and repairs traffic signs, including installing sign posts and signs in accordance with federal, state, and city codes; troubleshoots traffic signal and street light maintenance problems; performs welding as needed.Performs graffiti abatement duties, including locating, documenting, and cleaning graffiti and notifying appropriate City staff as needed; inspects City for graffiti vandalism, uses appropriate chemicals and high-pressure equipment to remove graffiti, and operates paint truck to repaint as necessary.Participates in cleaning out homeless encampments.When performing the facilities maintenance assignment:Performs maintenance and repair activities of City parks and related facilities to ensure safe and efficient access for the public, including parks, athletic fields, trails, facilities, and buildings.Performs a variety of landscape maintenance duties, including planting, irrigating, fertilizing, and maintaining flowers, shrubs, hedges, and trees; performing weed abatement using a chemical sprayer; irrigating, aerating, mowing, and fertilizing turf; removing fallen trees and limbs, stumps, and related debris; raking leaves and clearing debris from walkways, fields, and other facilities; picking up trash and emptying receptacles.Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems; installs, adjusts, repairs, and inspects irrigation systems; determines watering needs; changes and adjusts heads and maintains controllers; installs and rewires irrigation clocks; participates in irrigation system installation and maintenance projects.Inspects, maintains, and repairs playground equipment, picnic tables, drinking fountains, park and trail lighting systems, athletic fields, and other related parks equipment and facilities.Ensures the safety of the City's fountains; drains and power washes surfaces as needed; tests the chlorine and pH values of the water and adds chemicals as required; maintains accurate documentation.Maintains parks and landscaped areas in a clean and safe condition, including picking up trash, removing graffiti, and cleaning, repairing, and maintaining restrooms and fixtures.Ensures the safety of City's pools and related facilities for public use; tests the temperature and performs chemistry tests including chlorine levels, pH values, and total alkalinity of the pool water; adds chemicals as required; performs cleans drains, filter tanks, and filter screens; maintains required records.Maintains and repairs City facilities and buildings by performing carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, and mechanical repair work.Performs various custodial duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting; sets-up rooms for meetings.When performing all assignments:Inspects the City for safety issues, structural integrity, and possible future work projects and programs, and appropriately marks areas that need to be repaired.Operates and maintains specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment and hand and power tools related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of infrastructure, buildings, and related facilities.Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.Implements traffic safety control plans, including setting up delineation and signage around work sites and special events to ensure safe conditions for the general public and City workers.Maintains public facilities, shop and garage areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.Maintains accurate logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.Responds to after-hours emergencies.Assists in the set-up and removal of equipment and facilities needed for special events.Performs other duties as assigned.Typical QualificationsKnowledge of:Basic principles, practices, tools, and materials related to the maintenance and repair of infrastructure, facilities, and buildings similar to those in a municipal environment.Basic mathematics.Safe driving rules and practices.Basic computer software related to work.English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.Ability to:Perform basic construction, maintenance, and repair work.Make accurate arithmetic calculations.Learn to safely and effectively use and operate a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair equipment and tools.Learn applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility.Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.Understand and follow oral and written instructions.Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Education and Experience: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and one (1) year of construction, maintenance, and repair and equipment operation experience is desirable.
