News Editor, Science
$165k - $185kNew York Times
The New York Times mission is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. Independent journalism is at the heart of all we do, and we bring stories from nearly 160 countries across print, audio and digital platforms. The New York Times is looking for an experienced editor to drive news coverage on its Science desk. You will need excellent news judgment, a fast metabolism for executing ideas quickly, and the ability to inspire and cajole a broad group of reporters on complex beats. In partnership with the desk head and deputy, the Science news editor will launch reporters on stories quickly and manage evolving coverage, often collaborating with other desks and senior management. You will be conversant in all of our live and breaking news vehicles, and you will be a master of language, upholding Times standards and style and handling both first and second edits. The Science news editor must stay abreast of the desk’s competitors and be determined to beat them not just on quality but on speed. Beyond driving news coverage, the editor will also participate in the general editing duties of the desk, running a small group of reporters across news, explanatory, features and investigation styles. This is an in‑office position based in New York City and requires regular attendance in the office four days each week. Some flexibility to work remotely may be available per departmental guidance. Responsibilities Champion scoops big and small while maintaining a passion for science coverage in all its forms. Develop a strong relationship with every reporter on the desk and fully manage a small group of reporters. Guide other editors on the desk to produce quick‑turn news. Demonstrate support for the Times’s value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission. Report to the Science Editor. Basic Qualifications 10+ years of editing experience at a major publication or media organization. Experience directly managing and editing reporters and driving news. Demonstrated excellence at editing under pressure and handling sensitive scoops. Experience framing and elevating stories for the broadest possible audience. Experience brainstorming ideas and coaching reporters through tough situations to produce their best work. Preferred Qualifications 5+ years of experience as an editor or reporter on scientific topics. The annual base pay range for this role is between $165,000 and $185,000 USD. For roles in the U.S., you may be eligible for variable pay such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision coverage, a Flexible Spending Account, a company‑matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs. For roles outside the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process. We’re excited to learn more about you and your experience. To keep our hiring process fair and authentic, we ask that you submit your own work and not use GenAI tools to generate substantive content during the application and interview process. For engineering candidates, we will let you know which specific GenAI tools are permitted for the technical assessment.
