Overview The United States Attorney's Office for the Central District of California (USAO) is one of the largest and most impactful in the nation, serving nearly 20 million people in seven counties. The Office enforces the laws and defends the interests of the United States through three primary litigating Divisions: Criminal, National Security, and Civil. Responsibilities Assistants United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Criminal Division prosecute federal cases, advise federal law enforcement agents on investigations, present cases to the grand jury, try cases in federal court, and represent the United States in criminal appeals before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In the National Security Division, work on combating national security and cyber security threats. Responsibilities may increase and assignments may become more complex as training and experience progress. Position Details This is an open continuous announcement to solicit applications for immediate and future vacancies. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication (fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing). Continued employment requires a favorable background investigation adjudication. Locations include Los Angeles with branch offices in Santa Ana and Riverside. Travel may be required. Requirements You must be a United States citizen or national. J.D. degree and active membership in the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required. If not active in the California bar, you must take and pass the California bar exam; AUSAs must maintain California bar membership. Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Must register for Selective Service if applicable. Initial appointment is conditioned upon satisfactory preemployment adjudication; continued employment requires favorable background adjudication. Qualifications Required Qualifications: J.D. degree, active bar membership in any U.S. jurisdiction, United States citizenship. Preferred Qualifications: Strong litigation experience, excellent writing skills, compelling academic record, demonstrated public service interest, courtroom presence, and ability to work with diverse individuals. Experience level varies; highly qualified new graduates with relevant experience may be considered. Ties to the Central District of California are considered. All initial attorney appointments require favorable background adjudication. Education J.D. degree required. Salary and Benefits Salary ranges and benefits are determined by years of attorney experience. Benefits include paid leave, health benefits, retirement, telework options, and other federal employee programs. Specifics are provided by the employing agency. Relocation and Travel Relocation expenses may be authorized (not less than 100 miles from the old duty station). Travel required: 1 to 5 nights per month.
