Registered Nurse Location: MO-SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, 1201 Grand, St. Louis, MO Worker Type: Regular Schedule: Weekend program, 7 pm - 7 am Sign-on Bonus: Bonuses up to $30,000! Job Summary The Registered Nurse is a professional practitioner who assesses, manages, directs, and provides nursing care activities during the patient's hospital stay and coordinates planning with other disciplines, utilizing a patient/customer‑driven approach. Essential Functions Performs comprehensive nursing assessment/reassessment. Performs age‑appropriate admission or transfer assessment, obtaining input from family/guardian when appropriate. Accurately documents findings. Performs assessment of post‑op/post‑invasive procedure patients. Assesses and documents education and discharge needs of patient and family on admission and throughout hospitalization. Provides patient reassessment documenting observations according to plan of care, changes in condition, status, diagnosis, response to care, procedures, and standards of care. Establishes, coordinates, and evaluates a plan of care based on assessment data, patient diagnosis, lab data, tests, procedures, physician orders, protocols, and standards of care. Identifies short‑ and long‑term goals based on patient care needs. Formulates nursing interventions to achieve desired outcomes. Incorporates disease‑specific evidence‑based practice into care plan and documentation. Provides and documents nursing interventions based on assessed needs, plan of care, and changes in status. Collaborates with health team members for coordination of daily care plan for assigned patients. Provides patient care, including accurate hand‑off communication reports. Administers and documents medications accurately according to policies and procedures. Monitors, maintains, and documents accurate IV fluids and parenteral nutrition per policies. Completes referrals as indicated. Requests consultation for special needs, equipment, or information. Provides patient/family education and discharge planning per documentation guidelines. Clarifies physician orders as warranted and acknowledges orders in a timely manner. Assists physician with procedures/treatments or delegates to Care Partner. Documents readback for all telephone/verbal orders; takes orders only in emergencies. Recognizes changes in patient condition and takes appropriate actions. Involves family/guardian in decision‑making when appropriate. Recognizes risks and takes action. Incorporates infection control practices in daily care. Communicates nursing care and changes in condition. Performs ongoing evaluation of effectiveness of care based on assessment data and interventions. Evaluates effectiveness of patient/family education. Evaluates and modifies plan of care as indicated. Recognizes significant changes in clinical parameters and reports immediately to physician. Identifies problems, gathers data, suggests solutions, communicates within appropriate authority lines, works toward problem resolution. Reports variations from care/treatment following the occurrence reporting policy and procedures. Specialized Care Restraint Care: Initiate/evaluate alternatives prior to application; apply restraints per procedure; monitor patient response; provide specified care during restraints; consult peers for alternatives; document use thoroughly. Pain Management: Assess pain presence; incorporate cultural/spiritual beliefs; implement prevention‑focused techniques; involve family in plan; consider massage, repositioning, immobilization, music therapy. Abuse Assessment: Recognize abuse criteria; report signs to relevant authorities; take appropriate action to support patient safety. Quality and Performance Adhere to all quality and performance standards, policies, procedures, and protocols. Participate in learning experiences to increase competence. Demonstrate appropriate technical and cognitive skills. Keep current with all hospital/unit information. Attend staff meetings and review minutes when absent. Participate in committees, shared governance, unit‑based practice council activities. Keep up to date with policies, procedures, publications. Adapt to changing work demands and respond positively to change. Assist and support peers and team members. Orient and precept new employees as needed. Serve as resource person to staff, patients, families, medical staff. Delegate care appropriately and redirect staff when plan changes. Communicate plan of care professionally. Supervise and teach students/new staff nurses. Safety & Infection Control Practice standard precautions and dispose of hazardous waste per guidelines. Maintain safe, clean, therapeutic environment, clutter‑free. Follow hand hygiene procedures. Utilize safe patient handling techniques. Maintain minimum noise and background conversation. Adhere to dress code. Report risk management concerns via eSRM. Complete all mandatory annual requirements: maintain license, BLS/HI, TB screening, influenza vaccination, ethics training, safety training, security course, abuse & neglect course, bloodborne pathogens training, competency trainings. Service Excellence Demonstrate care and courtesy. Provide prompt, respectful, courteous service. Meet physical, spiritual, psychological, emotional needs of patients and families. Collaborate to answer call lights promptly. Apologize for mix‑ups and delays. Maintain confidentiality and communicate effectively. Listen to concerns and address needs. Explain procedures and documentation in understandable manner. Allow time for questions. Share knowledge with other departments. Provide cost‑effective services and use resources wisely. Recommend practice improvements. Ensure customer satisfaction using AIDET and “One Mission, One Spirit”. Incorporate performance improvement and evidence‑based practice. Development & Improvement Assist in developing and implementing nursing unit goals. Stay current with evidence‑based initiatives. Identify improvement opportunities, collect data, suggest solutions. Participate in performance improvement process and team. Contribute to data collection and evaluation of improvement results. Participate in nursing research and hospital performance improvement activities. Participate in occurrence reviews and maintain quality indicators. Age Appropriate Care Provide age‑appropriate care to adult and geriatric patients. Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development appropriate to age groups served. Assess and interpret age‑specific data. Use communication skills for age‑specific responses. Involve family in decision‑making. Provide service needed for the age groups served. Qualifications Licensed to work as an RN in the state of Missouri. BLS HCP certification. Registered Nurse (RN) certification or RN issued by Compact State. Working Conditions May be exposed to risk of bloodborne diseases, unpleasant elements, accidents, injuries, illness. Subject to emergency situations and irregular hours. Physical Requirements Occasional prolonged standing/walking; occasional lifting, positioning, pushing or transferring patients; occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.
