Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - RME Coordinator

Summary The Medical Supply Technician in Sterile Processing primary function is responsible for sterile processing and/or high-level disinfectants of critical and semi-critical reusable medical equipment - maintaining quality assurance with all the machines - scopes and high-level disinfectors. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Experience and/or Education (1) Experience Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work or (2) Education One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing - nursing assistant - hospital corpsman - and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position or (3) Experience/Education Combination Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable Grade Determinations: Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade(GS-6) level Demonstrated Knowledge - Skills - and Abilities In addition to the experience above - the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1 Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings 2 Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination 3 Working knowledge of medical terminology - anatomy and physiology - microbiology - medical conditions and procedures 4 Knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation 5 Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures Demonstrated Knowledge - Skills - and Abilities In addition to the experience above - the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1 Detailed knowledge of complex surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings 2 Ability to assemble specialty operating room and clinic instrument sets 3 In-depth knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment 4 Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in order to convey information and thoughts to others Assignment: The Advanced MST assembles highly complex instrument sets including - but not limited to - open heart - major orthopedic total joint - cardiovascular - craniotomy and complex endoscopic instrumentation Processes all complex endoscopic instrumentation to include those medical devices used in the gastroenterology laboratory - bronchoscopy laboratory - urology and operating room Reviews manufacturer guidelines to ensure the correct methods and parameters are followed when cleaning - decontaminating and sterilizing RME Troubleshoots and analyzes mechanical failures and makes necessary adjustments to complex decontamination and sterilization equipment - as well as interprets alarm conditions which may occur while operating the equipment Informs management and healthcare staff when cleaning and processing standard operating procedures (SOPs) or instruction for use have been changed or updated to assure the changes have been validated to meet all guidelines Reference: For more information on this qualification standard - please visit The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7. Physical Requirements: ???????This work is performed in various settings: decontamination - preparation - clean sterile supply (preparation) and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot - cold - drafty - and poorly lighted The employee is subject to the possibility of falls - scrapes - cuts - bruises - and other injuries from material handling equipment The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds) The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating - disassembly and assembly of instrumentation. Duties Reusable Medical Device(RMD): The RMD Coordinator provides oversight in the development - implementation - coordination - maintenance and evaluation of critical and semi-critical medical devices within the RMD Program Reviews the acquisition of new equipment and advises using services of anticipated delivery dates Controls the release of any new equipment until verification of all SOPs have been developed and communicated to staff This includes coordination across services and/or disciplines which can influence the organizational mission - vision - values and strategic priorities for RMD Monitors - analyzes and provides consultation on infection control issues regarding RMD Participates in clinical rounds to assist in the verification of each service's SOPs for RMD Investigates the need for any manufacturer and model-specific SOP required for new RMD at the time of the acquisition request When new SOPs are required - obtains the necessary information from the manufacturer or vendor Develops SOPs to standardize equipment used in the medical center Educates hospital staff - including the executive level - on all new equipment to ensure compliance is met as it relates to RMD FUNCTIONS OR SCOPE OF ASSIGNED DUTIES: Orders reprocessing-related supplies and RMD for SPS - contacts vendors to obtain quotes - and researches products and supplies Initiates tracking reports and data analysis for SPS Works with Logistics regarding safety notifications/recalls and other related issues Coordinates with SPS Management - Logistics - Reusable Medical Equipment (RMD) RN Coordinator - RMD Educator and Trainer - Quality Assurance for all new purchased and leased instrumentation Corresponds and reports to the RMD Committee and other Facility/VISN/National Councils/Committees involved with SPS Responds to VISN/National Action Trackers Has knowledge of sterile processing procedures - surgical instrumentation - surgical procedures - sterility - and aseptic techniques needed to perform the duties Has typing - computer skills and facility office software knowledge required to perform duties Reviews IFUs and create Standard Operating Procedures for RMD (SOP) The position may be assigned to work as needed on other than normal working tours of duty or shifts - either in the evenings or on weekends Such scheduling for other than normal working tours of duty will be assigned as needed by the Deputy Chief/ Chief of Sterile Processing Services (SPS) Completes mandatory training coursework and VA SPS certification as required for a Sterile Processing Technician position in the VA Knowledgeable of instrument marking techniques for the proper identification and tracking of surgical instrumentation after sterilization Maintains records produced by reprocessing equipment and instrument tracking systems Highly proficient in the Instrument Tracking System used in SPS as they are responsible for providing expertise - guidance - and training when necessary - for and to the staff and management of the Sterile Processing Service Incumbent is competent in and uses electronic equipment tracking systems to plan for and determine current and future supply and instrument requirements to meet the needs of the facility Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Work Schedule: MON-FRI 0730-1600 Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay - a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade) Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave - 13 days of sick leave - 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual - based on prior [work experience] or military service experience Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment - up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth - adoption - or foster care placement of a child Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment - full time employees with a total family income below $144 -000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66 Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Telework: N/A Virtual: This is not a virtual position Functional Statement #: 10172F #J-18808-Ljbffr Direct Jobs
