Summary Registered Nurse – Ambulatory Care (PACT) position with the Central Texas VA Health Care System. Duty station: Doris Miler Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 4800 Memorial Drive, Waco, TX 76711‑1329. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) – no person shall serve in direct patient‑care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by ACEN or CCNE at the time of completion. Individuals attending a master’s‑level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s level in nursing may be appointed on a temporary basis before licensure, then converted to permanent after graduate completion. Upon achievement of a state license – appointment on a temporary basis and later conversion to permanent upon successful completion of the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6). In the case of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing – possession of a current, full, active, unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Credit for foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree/entry level requires a formal equivalency validation from a recognized evaluator accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Current, full, active, unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in any U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who meet basic education requirements but lack licensure may be appointed at entry step with a 120‑day temporary appointment while pursuing licensure; can be extended up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis. Grandfathering provision applies to those currently employed in VHA with the 0610 series as of the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024). Grade determination requires meeting scope‑education and dimension criteria detailed online. Dimension requirements (Practice – Veteran/Patient Driven Care – Leadership – Professional Development and Evidence‑Based Practice/Research) are available via the assessment link. Grade/Level Scope Education details range from Nurse I Level I to Nurse III, with varying educational prerequisites (ADN, BScN, MSN, or advanced degrees) and professional experience requirements as listed in VA Qualification Standards. Reference: For more information on this qualification standard – Physical Requirements Heavy lifting – 45 pounds and over Moderate lifting – 15–44 pounds Heavy carrying – 45 pounds and over Moderate carrying – 15–44 pounds Light carrying – under 15 pounds Straight pulling (1–2 hrs) Pushing (1 hr) Reaching above shoulder Use of fingers Both hands required Walking (8–10 hrs) Standing (8–10 hrs) Repeated bending (0.5 hrs) Both legs required Near vision correctable at 13″‑16″ to Jaeger 1‑4 Visual 20/40 DVA, corrected; both eyes required Depth perception Ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors Hearing (aid may be permitted) Sitting (8 hrs) Simple grasping (2–4 hrs) Fine manipulation (including keyboarding 4–6 hrs) Twisting (2 hrs) Mental and emotional stability Duties The Outpatient Staff Registered Nurse (RN) delivers direct, gender‑specific care and coordinates services for veterans within the Primary Care Department. Responsible and accountable for independent nursing practice, making appropriate decisions about delegation of tasks to ensure safe, high‑quality care. Provides essential, evidence‑based nursing care to assigned patients while building technical and clinical competencies. Applies the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation) under close supervision. Delivers veteran‑centered care with attention to patient experience, safety, and satisfaction. Communicates and collaborates effectively with the interprofessional team, demonstrating growth toward independent team leadership. Utilizes educational resources and self‑evaluation to support ongoing professional development. Incorporates evidence‑based practice and patient preferences into care to improve outcomes and resource use. Benefits Competitive salary with regular increases and potential for performance awards.
