Job Summary TITLE: Lead Nurse
JOB GOAL: To provide direct and indirect nursing services to enhance student academic achievement and healthy lifestyle while also providing supervisory duties over all other district nurses.
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Superintendent and Director of Educational Services
SUPERVISES: School Nurses
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree preferred
2. Possess and maintain an Alabama License as a Registered Nurse
3. Three (3) years' experience in school nursing, hospital, community health or a pediatric clinic
4. Clinical nursing skills necessary to provide safe care to students with special healthcare needs
5. Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with administration, parents, faculty and students
6. Possess and maintain CPR certification (may be obtained after employment)
7. Such alternative qualifications to those listed as the Board may require.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Demonstrates support for the school system, its purpose, direction, and priorities.
2. Provides administrative leadership for nurses.
3. Conducts staff meetings and training to promote efficient functioning of the nursing program.
4. Demonstrates the ability to multitask, to delegate appropriately, and to prioritize tasks efficiently.
5. Maintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its students.
6. Attends board meetings and work sessions and prepares reports for the board as needed.
7. Lifts and/or moves students as needed.
8. Participates in IEP meetings related to health issues.
9. Oversees the development, reviews, and explains student healthcare plans to school staff (teachers, bus drivers, etc.) and others as needed.
10. Collaborates with the principals to identify students with routine or special healthcare needs or procedures and follows the plan of care developed through collaboration with the principal, healthcare prescriber and parents.
11. Gathers all pertinent data to develop and implement an individualized healthcare plans for students with healthcare needs.

12. Keeps student healthcare plans current and accurate.
13. Provides direct nursing services, which include the administration of medications following all criteria in the Medication Curriculum developed by the Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Board of Nursing; performs nursing care within the RN scope of practice as defined by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
14. Documents all nursing activities thoroughly and accurately following established protocols.
15. Compiles and submits required departmental and/or state reports accurately before scheduled deadlines.
16. Assists in carrying out policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases.
17. Administers first aid to students according to standard nursing protocols and school policies.
18. Oversees the care of medically fragile students and ensures all staff are properly trained to meet the needs of each student.
19. Assists teachers with health education programs.
20. Performs health screening procedures as scheduled.
21. Serves as healthcare liaison between schools, healthcare providers, families and the community.
22. Reports potential or current school health/safety/abuse issues or code of conduct violations to the principal and Superintendent.
23. Maintains privacy and confidentiality in accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
24. Assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of the school health office as assigned.
25. Participates in professional growth and development activities as required by the Superintendent or Superintendent Designee.
26. Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of practice and procedures appropriate to specific health professions and license requirements for designated healthcare personnel; supervises and participates in the evaluation of designated healthcare personnel.
27. Makes routine visits to observe and evaluate the nursing practice of regular, temporary, and substitute staff/nurses and provides follow-up including consultation, recommendations, and or demonstrations of nursing skills.
28. Provides orientation, in-service training and professional development for staff, new hires, and substitute nursing personnel.
29. Coordinates health services such as clinics and health screenings for students and employees with community healthcare providers and public health officials.
30. Monitors student immunization compliance with state and district mandated immunization policies.
31. Consults and coordinates with Exceptional Education Department and Section 504 Staff for provision of related services for students with special needs and provides assistance in the planning and/or administering of medical services for those students identified as exceptional education and Section 504 students.

32. Serves as the primary sub nurse and assumes the position and duties of a school nurse when a school nurse is absent.
33. Maintains an active substitute list and provides qualified nursing staff as substitutes in the event of absence if unable to cover.
34. Works with school nurses, substitute nurses and agencies to ensure a school nurse is on site during the school day and all other times nursing requirements are needed for students to include nurse for summer school, summer programs, extended school year services, and all summer extracurricular/athletic events.
35. Serves as the nurse for field trips, after-school activities, and extracurricular activities.
36. Oversees scheduling and supervises the student drug screening process.
37. Participates in professional growth activities as requested.
38. Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism and ethics, and works cooperatively with the Board, superintendent, other administrators, board employees, parents and students.
39. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policies and state and federal rules and regulations.
40. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
41. Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
42. Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system.
43. Uses collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
44. Serves on school system committees, task forces, or teams as needed.
45. Evaluates assigned employees in accordance with established timelines and board policies.
46. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
47. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with board policies and procedures.
48. Performs other job-related duties as directed by the Superintendent or Superintendent Designee.
SALARY: Based on the Jacksonville City School System Salary Schedule
