The Sterile Processing Technician III has advanced knowledge of the function of surgical instrumentation during the course of patient care. Responsibilities include working directly with surgery clinical staff and managers to assess, troubleshoot, and make recommendations for all trauma and tertiary care surgical procedures. The technician demonstrates a clear understanding of the entire sterilization process, including infection control, instrument functional quality control, sterility maintenance, and aseptic technique. They have high professional and ethical standards employed in making critical decisions in every aspect of the sterilization process. The Sterile Processing Technician III serves as a resource and mentor for the SP team and for the surgical clinical team, assumes a lead role in the absence of the Manager and/or Coordinator, and participates in distribution of instrument trays for surgical case carts according to the requirements of the surgery schedule, pick lists, and surgeon's preference cards. They demonstrate a clear understanding of the instrumentation utilized during surgical procedures, conduct orientation of new team members, and work as the patient's advocate regarding the most correct and safest form of sterilization for all patient care instrumentation and equipment. The technician ensures that through specific infection control procedures a safe environment is maintained, determines the best method of processing ever changing, highly technical tertiary patient care instrumentation and equipment, and maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Qualifications include a high school graduate or equivalent, nationally certified through Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA); or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD), and maintain required CEU's in accordance with the Certifying body. Experience of 2 years in sterile processing is required.
