Job Title Chief Forestry Fire Pilot Department: California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Salary: $7,948.00 - $10,488.00 per Month Position #: 542-065-1046-003 Telework: In Office Job Type: Permanent, Full Time Work Location: McClellan, CA (Sacramento County) Responsibilities Pilot a helicopter in single‑pilot operation over all types of terrain in aerial firefighting. Haul firefighters, inmates, cargo, and deliver water and retardant on fires from helicopter‑carried buckets or tanks. Conduct routine and emergency missions such as search and rescue, medivacs, reconnaissance, law enforcement, serial photography, and administrative flights. Support prescribed burning projects by hauling ignition devices and managing burning operations. Perform preventive maintenance and limited inspections on helicopters under direction of licensed aircraft mechanic. Act as air operations officer for special projects, training, and inspection of rental aircraft pilots. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Possession of a valid FAA Commercial Airman Certificate with rotorcraft‑helicopter rating or a valid FAA Airline Transport Pilot's Certificate with rotorcraft‑helicopter rating. Valid Class II Airman's Medical Certificate issued by an FAA authorized examiner. Valid driver license of the appropriate class issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Minimum 2,000 hours of pilot‑in‑command helicopter flight time including: At least 500 hours of mountain pilot‑in‑command flight time above 4,000 ft MSL. At least 500 hours of turbine helicopter time as pilot‑in‑command. 250 hours of low‑level mission helicopter flight (fire control, survey, patrol, search and rescue, spray or seeding). At least 100 hours of helicopter sling‑load operation. At least 50 hours of pilot‑in‑command helicopter flight in the past year. Knowledge of safe helicopter operating procedures, state and federal forest and fire laws, FAA regulations, and terrain/weather conditions in California. Ability to make sound decisions under hazardous conditions and operate helicopter in hazardous environments. Physical condition suitable for helicopter operations. Additional Desirable Qualification Forest‑firefighting experience with helicopters is desirable. Benefits Base salary $7,948.00 - $10,488.00 per month. Extended duty week compensation $2,701.00 - $3,564.00 paid every four weeks. Annual compensation $130,489 – $172,188. Medical, dental, vision benefits and other pay differentials.
