Staff Pharmacist - Non-Sterile Compounding Pharmacy

The Staff Pharmacist is responsible for the safe, accurate, and compliant preparation, verification, and dispensing of non-sterile compounded medications. This role supports day-to-day pharmacy operations, supervises compounding activities as needed, and ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, USP, and internal quality standards.

Essential Responsibilities

• Review and verify compounded prescriptions for clinical appropriateness, formulation accuracy, and dosing.
• Oversee and/or perform non-sterile compounding of creams, ointments, gels, capsules, oral liquids, suspensions, suppositories, and other custom preparations.
• Ensure proper calculation, ingredient selection, weighing, mixing, labeling, and documentation of compounded products.
• Supervise and support pharmacy technicians and other compounding staff in daily workflow.
• Provide clinical and formulation consultation to prescribers, patients, and internal staff regarding compounded medications.
• Maintain compliance with USP standards, FDA guidance, state board requirements, and internal SOPs.
• Monitor quality control processes, including ingredient verification, batch record review, equipment checks, and documentation accuracy.
• Ensure proper handling, storage, and inventory control of APIs, excipients, and finished preparations.
• Respond to formulation questions, troubleshoot compounding issues, and support continuous process improvement.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and inspection-ready compounding environment.
• Support adverse event reporting, product complaints, recalls, and investigations when needed.
• Promote adherence to hygiene, PPE, and safety requirements.
• Monitor compounding activities and intervene when deviations, errors, or unsafe practices are identified.

Qualifications

• Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, depending on state and employer requirements.
• Current and active pharmacist license in the applicable state.
• Prior experience in non-sterile compounding preferred.
• Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical calculations, dosage forms, compounding techniques, and formulation principles.
• Familiarity with USP <795> and USP <800> , and with good documentation practices.
• Excellent communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, quality-focused environment.

Preferred Experience

• Hands-on experience with topical and oral non-sterile compounds.
• Experience supervising technicians or supporting lab workflow.
• Familiarity with compounding software, batch records, and quality systems.
• Experience with stability, ingredient compatibility, or formulation troubleshooting.

Physical and Work Environment

• Work is performed in a pharmacy compounding environment.
• May require standing for extended periods, occasional lifting, and routine handling of chemicals, equipment, and containers.
• Must maintain compliance with safety and hygiene requirements at all times.
