DEPUTY SHERIFF II (SR-18)

Overview The Department of Law Enforcement has multiple vacancies located on Hawaii Island, Oahu, and Maui. This is a lateral entry opportunity for applicants who are currently employed as a sworn law enforcement officer in a full-duty status. Mandatory overtime may be required. Shift work includes evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments. Duties Summary This is the fully competent, independent worker level in the series. Positions in this class exercise regular police powers in maintaining law and order and protecting individuals and property in the assigned area of work. Responsibilities include knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, arrest and evidence procedures, use of firearms and protective equipment, court processes, first aid, and related law enforcement practices. Some positions require knowledge of safety equipment and operation of small sea-going craft. The role requires good judgment, rapid analysis of situations, and appropriate action in emergencies. Some positions include the ability to operate a motorboat and to speak to groups or individuals. Minimum Qualification Requirements LEGAL AUTHORIZATION TO WORK : The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking government employment to be U.S. citizens, nationals, permanent resident aliens, or eligible for unrestricted employment under federal law. Education : Graduation from high school or equivalent, with demonstrated knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, reading comprehension, and ability to write clear, factual reports. Desirable education includes a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university, demonstrating ability to write clear reports, read/interpret complex material, and solve problems. Specialized Experience : One (1) year of responsible work experience in law enforcement involving powers of arrest, investigation, evidence handling, and enforcement of compliance. Knowledge of statutes, procedures, and use of firearms is required. Substitutions allowed per Minimum Qualifications. For lateral-entry opportunities, successful completion of police recruit training or related law enforcement training may substitute for one year of specialized experience. License : Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment. Other Requirements : All applicants subject to drug screening and intensive background check. All applicants must be available to work rotating shifts (evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call). Mandatory overtime may be required. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the start of the Equivalency Law Enforcement Recruit Class (ELERC). In accordance with Hawaii Administrative Rules 23-10 and 14-3, derogatory information may be evaluated as part of suitability. Firearms Requirement : Applicants must meet federal and state firearms regulations. Applicants must not have a domestic violence conviction. Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement : Federal law prohibits hiring or promoting individuals with certain sexual conduct records. Applicants must not have engaged in disallowed sexual activities or been adjudicated for related offenses. Personal, Physical, and Medical Requirements : Applicants must demonstrate traits such as alertness, tact, integrity, honesty, good judgment, and the ability to interact with the public and staff. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position. Probationary Period: If selected, must pass ELERC phases and additional drug tests during a nine-month probation. Other Information Testing involves successive hurdles. Applicants must pass each phase to proceed. Qualified candidates will be contacted for ELERC scheduling. Test Phases and Selection Process The following test phases will be conducted by the Department of Law Enforcement (DLE): Written Test (Oahu): Administered on Oahu; costs to applicant for travel; passing is required to proceed. Physical Ability Test (PAT) (Oahu): Administered on Oahu; details provided upon scheduling; costs to applicant for travel. Passing is required to proceed. Physical benchmarks include Push-ups (minimum 20 in 1 minute), Sit-ups (minimum 20 in 1 minute), and a 1.5 mile run (minimum 21 minutes). Oral Interview (Oahu): Administered on Oahu; costs to applicant for travel; passing is required to proceed. Poss (POSS): Online proctored; passing is required to proceed. Criminal History Check, Background Investigation, and Truth Verification Examination: Requires consent and release forms; multiple records may be reviewed. Post Offer Psychological Evaluation and Interview with a Board-Certified Psychologist; two-part process with questionnaires and interviews; costs to applicant for travel. Medical/Physical Examination and Drug Test: Pre-employment exam and drug test paid by the applicant. Additional information includes reasonable accommodations under federal/state disability laws, and resources such as the PSLF program for eligible public service loan forgiveness.
