Work Location is 653 Veterans Pkwy., Clayton, NC (Johnston County) * The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a Equipment Upfitter Service Mechanic for the Vehicle Maintenance Division Public Works Department. Duties & Responsibilities Completes service and repair projects as specified on work orders; documents work performed; maintains vehicle service records and identifies necessary parts for order. Performs electrical work on automotive equipment such as diagnosing electrical shorts; installing batteries and terminals; repairing and adjusting lights; replacing wiring; testing electronic ignition systems and making necessary repairs. Services vehicles and equipment on a scheduled basis by checking a variety of fluid levels; changing oil, filters and plugs; lubricating equipment parts; realigning wheels and rotating tires; inspecting vehicles for wear or defective parts and replacing as necessary to ensure safe operation. Welds and fabricates replacement parts and metal for body repairs to vehicles and equipment. Performs NC vehicle safety inspections and maintains inspection records. Operates a variety of tools and equipment including lift jacks, tire changers, air guns, air compressors, cutting torches, welding equipment, and other hand tools in performing maintenance work. Equipment Installation: Mount toolboxes, ladder racks, bed liners, liftgates, snowplows, and emergency lighting packages onto new or existing fleet vehicles. Electrical Integration: Splice, route, and connect wiring for auxiliary power systems, radios, cameras, and warning lights using schematics. Fabrication and Adjustment: Modify brackets, frames, or truck bodies to fit non-standard parts using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment. Inspection and Testing: Test all newly installed mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components to ensure safe and proper operation before deployment. Documentation: Log parts used, hours worked and completed work orders for inventory tracking and fleet records. Emergency Systems: Install lightbars, sirens, discrete lighting, strobes, and electronic weapon mounts. Tactical Gear: Mount center consoles, mobile data terminals (MDTs), prisoner partitions, and K9 transport cages. Utility Equipment: Install and service heavy utility gear like winches, power inverters, truck cranes, and auxiliary batteries. Advanced Wiring: Manage complex 12V and high-amperage electrical routing to prevent battery drain and interference. Surveillance Tech: Integrated dash cameras, license plate readers (LPR), radar systems, and multi-band radio equipment. Technical Knowledge: Strong background in 12V DC automotive electrical systems and the ability to read technical wiring diagrams Tools: Proficiency with standard hand tools, power tools, pneumatic equipment, and diagnostic meters. Develop relationships with vendors and industry experts. Maintains shop area in clean and orderly state. Respond to emergency callouts. Performs equipment upfits for heavy vehicles, general service vehicles, and special service vehicles (Police and Fire). Performs related duties as assigned. Special Requirements, Education & Experience Thorough knowledge of the state of the art methods, materials, tools, and practices of the automotive equipment mechanic trade. Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work. Knowledge of time and labor necessary to accomplish automotive equipment upfits. Knowledge of diagnostic testing of automotive, hydraulic, and electrical, electronic and computer control systems. Knowledge of the time and labor necessary to accomplish automotive equipment repairs. Skill in locating and determining the cause of automotive equipment malfunctions. Skill in effecting repairs of malfunctioning equipment. Skill in the use and care of tools employed in the automotive mechanic trade. Ability to plan and schedule time, materials, and labor to accomplish maintenance and repairs of automotive equipment. Required to obtain State certification as an emissions technician or other such certification or license required to maintain and repair County owned vehicles. Education And Experience High School diploma required. Associate degree in Automotive or Heavy Equipment Repair preferred. Class C drivers license required, Class A CDL preferred. EVT Certificates and ASE or any other manufacturer certification required. Course work in mechanical and/or electrical trade skills, and considerable related experience in repairing automotive, construction, and specialized equipment.
