Director of Development

Director of Development Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) has been providing caring, affordable, high‑quality health care and supportive services to everyone, with a special commitment to uninsured, low‑income and medically underserved persons. FHCSD is one of the top 10 largest federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in the country, operating more than 90 sites across San Diego County, including primary care clinics, behavioral health facilities, dental and vision clinics, substance use treatment programs, mobile medical units, urgent care centers, and a pharmacy. Responsibilities Possesses strong leadership and fund development skills; provides guidance and support to development staff; sets performance goals; and mentors staff to raise performance levels and increase fundraising year over year. Actively works with the CEO to develop a comprehensive development plan, including corporate, foundation, government grants, and other funding sources. Works to build an active and diversified donor base, developing long‑term relationships with all FHCSD donors. Responsible for successfully producing the Spirit of the Barrio (four times a year) and the donor newsletter, Adelante, a companion piece to the Spirit of the Barrio luncheons (produced six times a year). Effectively oversees daily organizational operations. Develops and articulates clear individual and team goals based on a sound annual development and communications plan so each team member understands their role in the overall effort. Develops a system to monitor all donor information and reports statistical analysis to senior leaders. Creates a schedule of donor communications, tailored to current interests and past donors who support the FHCSD organization, producing a minimum of six communications a year. Develops and oversees regular events through the event/fundraising team (open houses, dedication of new facilities, ground‐breakings, etc.). Through tours and the Spirit of the Barrio, develops strong access/influence contacts and cultivates a strong volunteer network. Requirements Bachelor's degree required. 8–10 years of experience working in Development and Grants. 5+ years of experience developing/leading events and solicitation campaigns. Traveling between sites and other locations is required as an essential function of the job; must have a car, a valid California driver’s license, and proof of minimum levels of car insurance as required under California law (limits of $100,000 recommended). An acceptable driving record is required. California law requires all drivers to obtain a valid California driver’s license within ten days of establishing residency. Mileage and other reimbursement are governed by policy. Experience / Specialized Skills Demonstrated experience in cultivating and expanding cultivated donors and building relationships. Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build relationships. Strong organizational skills; automation of tracking for donor experience, research, and tracking efforts. Experience with developing and executing events (fundraising, ribbon‑cutting, tours, dedications, etc.). Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives. Creative ability to engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside the organization. High energy and passion for the organization’s mission. Ability to construct, articulate, and implement an annual strategic development plan. Strong organizational and time‑management skills with exceptional attention to detail; meets deadlines. Excellent donor relations skills; comfortable speaking to large or small groups. Professional and resourceful style; can work independently and as a team player, taking initiative and managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. Minimum of 8–10 years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization with demonstrated success in development (grants, direct solicitation, events, donor communications, minor/major gifts).
