Cosmetology: Contract Instructor-College Credit

Position Applications are being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor of Cosmetology at San Diego City College. The candidate selected for the position will be expected to start January 2027, which is the beginning of the spring 2027 semester. The assignment may include online, day, evening, Saturday, and/or off-campus classes and may be located at City College or other District facilities at the option of the Chancellor. The teaching schedule will vary based on class schedule and business needs. Position Type: Academic; Bargaining Unit: AFT/College Faculty; FLSA Status: Exempt (does not accrue overtime); Location: San Diego City College; Position Number: 011445; Department: School of Business, IT & Cosmetology. Responsibilities Teach cosmetology courses, including lecture and laboratory components, in a variety of modalities (in-person, hybrid, and online; synchronous and asynchronous). Provide student support, including for those who are English language learners or have diverse backgrounds, and work to develop tools and resources to serve historically marginalized populations. Develop and maintain curriculum and use professional resources (e.g., Milady Cengage) and engage in shared/participatory governance. Build and maintain professional, community, and industry partnerships, including industry advisory boards, and assist in industry placement and assessment of students. Collaborate with departmental colleagues, staff, and administrators to support student success and school initiatives. Participate in a variety of departmental and campus activities and contribute to a positive learning environment and effective class management. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications (MQs) and Desired Qualifications Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and related classroom strategies. Experience working with diverse faculty, staff, and students from varied socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including different levels of academic preparation and abilities. Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse student and staff backgrounds. Professional experience in a spa, hair salon, barbershop, nail salon, or related institution offering cosmetology services. California Cosmetology/Barbering and/or Esthetician license (valid). California teaching credential (valid). At least three (3) years of relevant teaching or work experience in cosmetology within the last five (5) years. Commitment to remaining current in the discipline and maintaining program excellence. Experience developing college curriculum and using Milady Cengage resources. Experience with shared governance and with building professional, community, and industry partnerships. Experience in industry collaboration, including assessment and placement of students in related jobs. Ability to design and teach cosmetology courses across modalities (in-person, hybrid, online). Ability to work collegially with colleagues and participate in campus activities. Experience supporting diverse students, including English language learners and those with prior learning experiences. Knowledge of credit-for-prior (CPL) and work-based learning (WBL) strategies. Foreign Degrees Applicants with foreign degrees must have coursework evaluated by a professional association that is a member of NACES or ACEI, and submit the evaluation with the online application.
