Job Description

The Quality Technician plays a key role in ensuring that all food products are safe, compliant, and consistently meet customer expectations. Working on the first shift from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., this position focuses on daily quality checks, laboratory testing, documentation, and supporting plant personnel with food safety practices in a regulated manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

• Run daily quality checks on products and help set up testing procedures and equipment.
• Test products for key quality attributes such as salt content, pH levels, and texture to ensure they meet specifications.
• Handle and prepare samples from raw materials through finished goods for various quality and microbiological tests.
• Maintain, calibrate, and verify proper operation of laboratory equipment to ensure accurate test results.
• Update quality procedures, work instructions, and training materials as needed to reflect current standards and practices.
• Train plant staff on basic food safety principles and proper handling procedures to support compliance with regulatory and company requirements.
• Evaluate products against established standards and decide whether they can be released or must be held for further review.
• Enter test data into systems, manage product specifications, and ensure information is accurate and current.
• Organize and maintain quality records, test results, and documentation to support audits and regulatory requirements.
• Assist with pre-operational inspections of equipment and production areas before manufacturing starts.
• Collect microbiological samples throughout production to monitor environmental and product safety.
• Apply knowledge of food safety programs, including HACCP, to daily activities and decision-making.
• Review Certificates of Analysis (COAs) for incoming raw materials and approve or reject them based on established criteria.
• Ensure all manufactured products are safe, legal, and meet internal standards as well as customer expectations.
• Perform visual inspections and sensory evaluations, including taste, smell, and appearance, to assess product quality.
• Support quality control and quality assurance activities in alignment with FDA and USDA regulations and internal FSQS programs.

Essential Skills

• Experience with food quality testing and evaluation in a manufacturing or laboratory environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to operate computers and interact with software applications.
• Strong sensory evaluation skills, including taste testing, smell testing, and visual inspection of products.
• Hands-on experience in quality control and quality assurance processes within food production.
• Working knowledge of HACCP and food safety programs and their application in a production setting.
• Understanding of FDA and USDA regulatory requirements related to food manufacturing.
• Ability to perform quality checks, inspections, and documentation with high attention to detail.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Four-year college degree in a related field is desirable.
• Previous FSQS (Food Safety and Quality Systems) experience, including internal cross-training, is a plus.
• Previous food manufacturing experience, particularly in a USDA regulated establishment, is preferred.
• Experience with GFSI schemes is beneficial, especially BRC.
• Comfort working with quality lab equipment and performing routine calibrations and maintenance.
• Strong organizational skills for maintaining records, specifications, and documentation.
• Effective communication skills for training plant staff and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Work Environment

The role is based in a GMP-compliant food manufacturing facility, where strict hygiene and safety standards apply. Team members follow guidelines that include no jewelry, fake eyelashes, or piercings on the production floor to maintain product safety. Certain areas of the facility can be cold, and company-provided jackets are available for comfort. The floors can be wet due to processing activities, but the environment is well lit and designed to be relatively comfortable for daily work. The position operates on a first shift schedule from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., within a structured and safety-focused production and laboratory setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Avon, OH.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
