Job Details

Deputy Chief Strategy Officer The University of Texas at Austin is undertaking a once-in-a-generation transformation to build a world-class academic health system in Central Texas. Anchored by Dell Medical School and the growing UT Dell Medicine clinical enterprise, this bold initiative is redefining how academic medicine delivers care, accelerates discovery, educates the next generation of healthcare leaders, and improves health across the communities we serve. As UT Dell Medicine continues to expand its clinical enterprise and advances toward the opening of a new hospital in 2030, the organization is making foundational decisions that will shape its future - from clinical service line development and market positioning to partnerships, digital health, AI-enabled care, and the design of a fully integrated academic medical center. Within this rapidly evolving environment, UT Dell Medicine is seeking a Deputy Chief Strategy Officer to serve as the primary operational and internal counterpart to the Chief Strategy Officer. Reporting directly to the Chief Strategy Officer, the Deputy Chief Strategy Officer will translate enterprise vision into executable strategy, lead the day-to-day work of the Strategy & Planning Office, and ensure the organization’s most important strategic priorities move from concept to implementation with rigor, discipline, and measurable results.

This leader will serve as the internal anchor of the strategy function, enabling the Chief Strategy Officer to maintain a strong focus on enterprise vision, digital health and AI innovation, external partnerships, and national thought leadership while ensuring the organization has the internal strategy capability required to deliver on its ambitions.

Why Join Us

At UT Dell Medicine and Dell Medical School, we are not simply building a new hospital - we are creating the next generation of academic medicine in Central Texas. This is an opportunity to join the organization at a defining point in its evolution and help shape the strategy, clinical portfolio, partnerships, and operating infrastructure of an academic health system being built for the future. Our mission and culture are grounded in: Excellence Innovation Collaboration Compassion Stewardship Impact

What You'll Do

  • Partner closely with the Chief Strategy Officer to translate enterprise priorities into structured strategies, workplans, analytical frameworks, and executable initiatives.
  • Lead strategic analysis supporting the development of the academic medical center, including service line prioritization, clinical program feasibility, market sizing, competitive positioning, capacity planning, and growth strategy.
  • Develop business cases, pro formas, investment analyses, and decision frameworks that enable executive leadership to evaluate strategic opportunities and allocate resources effectively.
  • Support the development, communication, and execution of enterprise strategic plans aligned with UT Dell Medicine's academic, clinical, research, and financial priorities.
  • Partner with department chairs, clinical leaders, and operational executives to develop service line strategies and roadmaps for new and expanding clinical programs.
  • Serve as the internal bridge between the Strategy & Planning Office and clinical, research, digital, data, and technology teams, helping translate digital health and AI priorities into actionable organizational initiatives.
  • Develop executive briefings, strategic analyses, presentations, and decision materials that clearly communicate complex issues to senior leaders, governance bodies, and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging developments in healthcare delivery, digital health, artificial intelligence, academic medicine, and health technology and evaluate their potential implications for UT Dell Medicine.
  • Support the identification and evaluation of strategic partnerships, affiliations, payer strategies, and business development opportunities through market analysis, due diligence, stakeholder mapping, and strategic assessment.
  • Engage with community organizations, regional healthcare partners, governmental stakeholders, and other external organizations in support of UT Dell Medicine's market strategy, population health priorities, and broader growth objectives.
  • Build and develop a high-performing Strategy & Planning team, establishing scalable processes, frameworks, templates, analytical capabilities, and ways of working as the organization grows.
  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Strategy & Planning Office, including project prioritization, workload allocation, team development, performance expectations, and execution rhythm.
  • Develop internal strategy capability by coaching analysts and emerging leaders and creating reusable tools, playbooks, and methodologies that strengthen enterprise strategic planning over time.
  • Serve as a trusted thought partner and deputy to the Chief Strategy Officer, representing the Strategy & Planning Office in executive and leadership forums as appropriate.
  • Monitor the execution of major strategic initiatives, identify emerging risks or dependencies, and proactively recommend course corrections.
  • Prepare and present strategic materials for senior leadership, executive committees, UT System governance bodies, and other key stakeholders.
  • As the academic health system matures, evolve the role toward broader leadership of strategy operations, team management, enterprise planning, and execution within an increasingly established strategy function.

Who You Are

The ideal candidate is a highly strategic, analytically rigorous, and operationally grounded healthcare leader who is equally comfortable helping shape enterprise strategy and doing the hands‑on work required to move it forward. You understand the complexities of healthcare delivery and academic medicine and can translate broad vision into disciplined execution. You bring strong financial and analytical capabilities, sound judgment, and the ability to synthesize complex information into clear recommendations for senior executives. You are energized by building rather than maintaining. You are comfortable operating in an environment where systems, processes, programs, and organizational infrastructure are still being developed and where the answer may not yet exist. You are also an effective and collaborative “number two” - confident enough to provide independent perspective and challenge assumptions while remaining highly aligned with the Chief Strategy Officer and broader executive team. You bring low ego, intellectual curiosity, adaptability, and the interpersonal steadiness necessary to build trust across clinical, academic, administrative, and external stakeholder groups.

You Bring

  • Deep knowledge of healthcare delivery models, clinical service line strategy, value‑based care, and the operational dynamics of complex health systems or academic medical centers
  • Demonstrated ability to translate enterprise vision into actionable strategies, workplans, analytical frameworks, and measurable initiatives
  • Strong financial acumen and experience developing and evaluating business cases, pro formas, investment models, and strategic alternatives
  • Experience supporting major healthcare growth, transformation, greenfield development, new clinical programs, or facility planning
  • Working knowledge of digital health, artificial intelligence, data‑driven healthcare, and emerging health technologies
  • Strong executive communication and presentation skills with the ability to synthesize complex information for C‑suite, board, and governance audiences
  • The ability to build organizational capability and maintain high standards in a resource‑constrained or rapidly evolving environment
  • A collaborative and adaptable leadership style with demonstrated success influencing across organizational boundaries
  • The patience, judgment, and resilience required to operate successfully in a founding‑era environment

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, or a related field
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in healthcare strategy, strategic planning, operational strategy, or healthcare consulting
  • Demonstrated experience translating high‑level strategy into structured workplans, analytical frameworks, business cases, and executable initiatives
  • Significant experience working within a health system, academic medical center, healthcare delivery organization, or senior healthcare consulting environment
  • Demonstrated financial and analytical capability, including experience developing or evaluating business cases, financial models, market analyses, or strategic investments
  • Experience working directly with senior executives and influencing complex, cross‑functional strategic decisions
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, and executive presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8-12 years or more of progressive healthcare strategy experience with increasing responsibility for strategy execution, analytical leadership, or operational strategy management
  • Prior experience as a Deputy, Vice President, Executive Director, or Senior Director of Strategy with accountability for team leadership and day‑to‑day strategy operations
  • Experience within a large academic medical center, integrated health system, or multi‑hospital organization
  • Experience supporting hospital development, major capital planning, new facility development, or greenfield healthcare initiatives
  • Experience developing clinical service line strategy, market strategy, capacity planning, or new program feasibility analyses
  • Experience supporting digital health, artificial intelligence, data strategy, or health technology initiatives
  • Familiarity with graduate medical education, payer strategy, value‑based care, affiliation strategy, or population health
  • Doctoral or professional degree such as an MD, DO, or PhD when paired with demonstrated healthcare strategy and operational experience
  • Familiarity with the Central Texas healthcare market or The University of Texas System
  • Leadership Relationships
  • The Deputy Chief Strategy Officer reports directly to the Chief Strategy Officer and works closely with the Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean, Chief Administrative Officer, Vice Deans for education, research, and clinical practice, department chairs, clinical and operational executives, and shared services leaders across UT Dell Medicine and The University of Texas at Austin.
