Ultrasound Technologist

Job Summary and Qualifications The Ultrasound Technologist (sonographer) performs diagnostic procedures utilizing a background in anatomy, physiology, physics and instrumentation to provide technical information to aid the physician. The sonographer maintains technical skills needed to perform ultrasound procedures including abdominal, OB/GYN, venous Doppler, small parts, pediatrics (where applicable) and invasive exams. In addition, the sonographer will maintain department supplies and equipment and will participate in the quality control of the ultrasound department. Essential Job Functions Maintains skills and understanding of innovation in techniques and equipment in medical sonography. Assists physicians in performing ultrasound-guided biopsies and other invasive procedures. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Responsible for the proper use of the radiology computer system (scheduling exams, patient tracking, film tracking, completion of exams, capture charges). Follows safety policies and procedures applicable to the job, recognizes impending crisis situations and institutes measures to prevent further complications. Understands and follows infection control and universal precautions, maintains order and cleanliness, practices sterile techniques and prevents cross-contamination. Additional Job Functions MAY have access to radiopharmaceuticals, contrast agents and other non-controlled medications as appropriate to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Supports the mission and vision of South Texas Radiology Imaging Centers (STRIC) and demonstrates excellent customer service at all times. Understands and is committed to helping STRIC and its associated facilities achieve its goals. Must learn and comply with system and facility safety policies and rules, use appropriate safety equipment, report unsafe conditions to supervisors and consult supervisors before performing a job function if unsure of safety procedure. Minimum Education, Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics Education: ONE of the following New hires as of October 1, 2011 Successful completion of training program in either: Ultrasonography Radiologic Technology Vascular Technology Associates of Science or higher degree Current employees Successful completion of training program in either: Ultrasonography Radiologic Technology Vascular Technology Medical Assisting Associates degree or higher degree Experience: none required Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility, and department/unit specific to patient population served (if applicable). Preferred: Two years experience as a full-time ultrasound technologist in a hospital or diagnostic imaging clinic setting. Minimum License, Certificates, or Registrations Required Must have and maintain ONE of the following: American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) RDMS – Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ABD or OBGYN) American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) ARRT (S)
